Obesity is evident in one in five children in Latvia, and the proportion of children who are overweight keeps increasing. As World Food Day, celebrated on 16 October, approaches, it is worth reminding of the significance of eating healthy food and leading a healthy lifestyle within the family, as it affects the health of both adults and children. Assistant Professor of the Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare and the Department of Sports and Nutrition of Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and dietologist Laila Meija explains about the health problems caused by obesity in children and reminds about things to avoid this risk as much as possible.

Currently the number of HIV-positive persons who are unaware of their disease is around 1800, as concluded after carrying out a mathematical modelling study. The international project was initiated in 2015 and carried out by Rīga Stradiņš University, in cooperation with institutions from France, Belgium and Estonia. The results that cover actual HIV transmission in Latvia and current identification approaches will be presented on 19 October during the concluding seminar at the RSU Medical Education Technology Centre.

In the printed version of Latvia's The National Encyclopaedia, titled Latvija, launched on 18 October, six of the fields covered were developed, headed by academic staff from Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU). Professor Jānis Vētra, Dean of the Faculty of European Studies, Professor Andris Sprūds, Assoc. Prof. Aldis Lieljuksis, Faculty of Law, Professor Anda Rožukalne, Dean of the Faculty of Communication, Assist. Prof. Klāvs Sedlenieks un lecturer Dita Rietuma. With these experts at the helm, entries were created in the following fields: medicine, international relations, internal security, law, communication science, social anthropology and cinema. The managing editor of The National Encyclopaedia is historian, and RSU Assoc. Prof. Valters Ščerbinskis.

Qualified doctors with sound medical knowledge who can treat thousands of patients with numerous different illnesses with insufficient funds for medicine. A lack of funding for doctors, medicine and sterilised healthcare products, filth, patients lying by the entrance of the hospital. Laura Bajāre, a sixth year student in the Faculty of Medicine at Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) came home from her internship in Morocco with these contrasting impressions.

On 18 and 19 October, social anthropologists from Rīga Stradiņš University, together with the assistance from the Baltic-German University Liaison Office, in conjuction with the Max Planck Institute for Social Anthropology and the Latvian Association of Anthropologists organised a conference "Tracing Informality in Southeast and Northeast Europe: Anthropological Perspectives". The keynote speaker was Čarna Brković, a lecturer in Cultural Anthropology and European Ethnology from the University of Goettingen, Germany with a lecture titled "Informality, Clientelism, Patronage, Favors: Anthropological Theories on Getting Things Done" where the topic was "getting things done" in a veering way, examples of this being the pursuit of personal contacts to access healthcare or social benefits.

On 28 September, Professor and head of the Department of Paediatric Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU), paediatric surgeon at Children’s Clinical University Hospital and head of the Clinic of Paediatric Surgery Arnis Eņģelis received the Professor Aleksandrs Bieziņš Award for lifetime achievement in recognition of his contribution to the development of paediatric surgery in Latvia and promotion of children’s health. This is the highest recognition in paediatric surgery.

Dr. Leigh Gibson is Reader in Biopsychology and Director of the Clinical and Health Psychology Research Centre within the Department of Psychology at the University of Roehampton, UK. His current research is concerned with influences on appetite and food choice, and their interaction with stress, health, and cognitive and emotional well-being. He also acts as an expert consultant for the food and drink industry in the UK. In September, Dr. Gibson visited Rīga Stradiņš University as guest lecturer at the Department of Sports and Nutrition at the RSU Faculty of Public Health and Social Welfare. His lectures were titled "Drivers and barriers in children’s eating and drinking" and "Cognitive deficits associated with obesity and diabetes: is poor gluco-regulation responsible?".

In cooperation with neurologists from Austria, France, Canada and Switzerland, for three years researchers from Rīga Stradiņš University, under the leadership of Professor Valērija Groma, will be working on an interdisciplinary study on the impact of joint diseases caused by inflammation on neurocognitive function. After intense competition, this study gained support under a fundamental and applied research programme, funded by the Ministry of Education and Science and administered by the Latvian Council of Science. In 2018, only 16 % of a total of 397 project applications were supported during the first stage.

On Wednesday 20 September, Rīga Stradiņš University (RSU) and Azienda Sanitaria di Bolzano hospital in Bolzano, located in Northern Italy, signed a cooperation agreement on the establishment of a RSU branch that will operate as a RSU clinical training centre. This is the second clinical training centre abroad to be established by RSU. The first branch was opened almost two years ago in the academic Lukas Hospital (Lukaskrankenhaus) in the city of Neuss, Germany.
