New Horned Dinosaur Reveals Unique Wing-Shaped Headgear!
Today, we announce the discovery of a new species of horned dinosaur (ceratopsian) based on fossils collected from Montana in the United States and Alberta, Canada. Mercuriceratops (mer-cure-E-sare-ah-tops) gemini was approximately 6 meters (20 feet) long and weighed more than 2 tons. It lived about 77 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous Period. Research describing the new species is published online in the journal Naturwissenschaften. Find out more here: http://evanslab.wordpress.com/2014/06/18/introducing-mercuriceratops/

This is the very first field guide on the butterflies of Ontario. It highlights the diversity of life by featuring a staggering 167 species of butterflies known to occur in Ontario. The ROM Field Guide to Butterflies of Ontario includes descriptive species accounts, flight season phenograms, and striking field photography of adults and caterpillars.

Using range maps based on hundreds of thousands of historical records, and what we believe to be a first for a field guide: computer-modelled predictive distributions, this book illuminates the complete life history of these butterflies. The field guide’s easy-to-access approach, comprehensive coverage, and beautiful design make it an essential guide for both amateur naturalists and professional lepidopterists. Renowned lepidopterists and authors Peter W. Hall and Colin D. Jones team up with the ROM’s Antonia Guidotti (co-author of Butterflies of Toronto) and Brad Hubley (co-author of Spiders of Toronto) for this in-depth, user-friendly field guide Butterflies of Ontario. We'll hangout with Antonia and Brad, tune in and ask them questions LIVE!
This Hangout On Air is hosted by Royal Ontario Museum. The live video broadcast will begin soon.

A key piece in the puzzle of the evolution of vertebrates has been identified after the discovery of fossilized fish specimens, dating from the Cambrian period (around 505 million-years old), in the Canadian Rockies. This fish, which bears the scientific name "Metaspriggina", shows a series of exceptionally well-preserved branchial arches near the fish's head. It is the first pair, closest to the head, that eventually leads to the evolution of jaws in vertebrates, and is a remarkable feature to see for the first time this early in the fossil record.

The Royal Ontario Museum connects people to their world and to each other
Introduction
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is an essential destination for making sense of the changing natural and cultural worlds. In combining a universal museum of cultures with that of natural history, the ROM offers an unusual breadth of experience to our audiences from around the world. We realize more acutely now that nature and humanity are intertwined, and the ROM offers many examples in its collections and programs of these fundamental relationships.
