Sri Lanka has a wealth of incredible life, one of the world’s Biodiversity Hotspots as defined by the United Nations. Among the mammals, Sri Lanka is home to an endangered population of Asian elephant and 30 species of bats. Amazingly, one-third of the 96 species of terrestrial mammals are endemic to the island (found nowhere else!).

The country experienced internal strife from 1983 to 2009 when a civil war raged.  In addition to the human turmoil, the fighting took a toll on the unique island ecosystem and contributed to less than 20% of the natural forest habitat intact. With the start of peace, Sri Lanka is rebuilding and opening up to the world. A neglected area that is being reinvigorated is environmental conservation.

The ROM Biodiversity expedition to Sri Lanka is one of the country’s first international collaborations since 1935 that is focused on surveying the small mammal diversity. This is both exciting and intimidating, but we are extremely thrilled to invite you along for the ride.

Join us for this hangout from the field where we'll talk to ROM scientists on the ground in Sri Lanka!

The ROM is gearing up for its next big exhibit: Viva Mexico: Clothing and Culture (opens May 9). The exhibition travels through 400 years of Mexican textiles and costumes as seen through the lens of the ROM’s internationally-respected collections. Go with us behind the scenes to discover the making of this exhibition.

Join Sascha Priewe (Managing Director – ROM Ancient Cultures, ROM World Art & Culture, ROM Textiles & Fashions) and Senior Collections Technician for textiles Karla Livingston for a 30 minute Google+ Hangout on Air and go behind the scenes into our Textiles storage and prep area. We'll show you the process behind the displays and some of the amazing pieces soon to go on display.

The Royal Ontario Museum connects people to their world and to each other
Introduction
The Royal Ontario Museum (ROM) is an essential destination for making sense of the changing natural and cultural worlds. In combining a universal museum of cultures with that of natural history, the ROM offers an unusual breadth of experience to our audiences from around the world. We realize more acutely now that nature and humanity are intertwined, and the ROM offers many examples in its collections and programs of these fundamental relationships.
