A scene with a high dynamic range - combined using +HDRMerge, processed using +RawTherapee. Bracketed source images are included for comparison.
Summer sunset in southern Sweden, July 2018, 10 minutes past sunset.

Juxtaposed are the bracketed source images, which were required to capture the extreme dynamic range of the scene.

One of the enhancements recently acquired by RawTherapee is a threshold slider for the Sharpening and Microcontrast tools, coded by Ingo. It allows you to make your photos appear to be more sharp and have more texture while suppressing the oversharpened-look one would typically get when pushing these tools. Another addition is being able to use both the AMaZE and the VNG4 demosaicing algorithms at the same time. AMaZE is overall great and resolves fine detail, but as a side-effect it tends to create grain and sometimes maze patterns in plain areas, such as sky. VNG4 on the other hand does not do as well with detail, but keeps plain areas soft. Using the new threshold code allows AMaZE to be blended seamlessly with VNG4 - the former is used on areas of high detail, while the latter is used on areas which should be soft.

Compare the sky and rock in these screenshots:
The first image uses no sharpening.
The second uses the sharpening tools available in RawTherapee-5.4.
The third uses the new AMaZE+VNG4 demosaicing method and RL Deconvolution in combination with the threshold adjuster.

In the news, Jacques is experimenting with new working and output spaces, and implemented a tool which allows you to generate v2 and v4 ICC profiles. You can help test and give feedback in GitHub.

In the news, Ingo improved the motion mask used when dealing with Pixel Shift photos. The improvement improves Pixel Shift merging, and allows you to better visualize what moved and how much it moved, which in turn allows you to better control how the merged composite is generated.
