I believe all of this plays into the larger problem of "goal" vs "journey". Video games are in general goal focused. How many times have you skipped quest text in an MMO, and just looked at how to trigger success, as opposed to actually finding out what is going on? We play games to win them, so what we end up doing is focusing on the victory and challenges, as opposed to what is going on. Even as story elements appear, we are already focusing on how to get to the next story, rather then appreciate what is happening right now. I believe both EC and you have hit aspects as to what creates this environment, however there is far more to it then that.
