The Public is a nice, modern feeling hotel with room for improvement. Clearly you could see bones of the former Ambassador East which was what this property used to be known as. The Public did keep the name of their well-known restaurant, Pump Room. There is no vent in the bathroom so expect it to take a while for the steam to clear off the mirror after you take a shower. When we checked in they offered to upgrade us to the larger, Deluxe King room for an additional $70 per night. The Deluxe has more sitting space. We did not take them up on the offer. Wi-fi is barely functional. You get “free” basic wi-fi that has a rate of 1 mbps. You can pay $20 for the the premium wi-fi of 4 mbps. The premium is still quite slow and definitely overpriced. This is clearly a function that needs to be modernized. We went to the Library and Coffee Bar on a Saturday night. We are in our mid-50’s and felt a bit out of place so took our drinks back to our room. It was loud and crowded with young, stylish professionals. We found out the next day that there were two parties going on in the bar which is why it was so crowded and boisterous. All of the staff at the Public we encountered were very gracious. We called down to the front desk on Saturday evening because our neighbor’s TV was so loud we could hear it in our room. I think it was a combination of their TV being turned up as well as the walls being thin. Security did come up and asked them to turn their TV down (and they did.) We could even hear our neighbor’s phone when it rang. After our first night we were surprised that the maid service did not refill the toiletries and emptied only one waste basket Sunday morning I went to the front desk and received a complimentary Chicago Tribune. I wanted a Diet Coke, but found that they don’t have coke products or any vending machines of any kind on any floor. The front desk directed me to the Library and Coffee Bar which has a breakfast service but they didn’t have any diet soda. They directed me to the Pump Room and I couldn’t find anyone there so I just went back to my room. I found that the Pump Room doesn’t open for brunch until 9:00 and I was there at 8:30.

I have conflicting feelings on this hotel. Coming here and walking into the foyer, the hotel came off as very impressive, luxurious and trendy. The staff were very quick and attentive, including the valet. Now once you step onto the elevator, press your floor and the doors close, things start to slowly fall apart. The hotel definitely needs to update the elevators. They do not match the interior of the hotel (especially the floor...ick) and really degrades the place ever so slightly. Get off and walk through a very dimly lit dark beige hallway with gold accents. Thinking about it, whoever designed these hallways was rather smart considering the fact that the dim lights and dark paint easily hides any imperfections from the old hotel. Finally, arrive at your room and open your door to one of the better aspects. The rooms are white and light beige, so walking out of the hallway brings such a refreshing change and gives a great aesthetic impact. The room on the other hand, is a whole different story when it comes to details. Lets start with the fact that there was not a coffee maker in the room. Going to many luxury hotels, I've come to expect this. Next, lets appreciate bathroom. There is white throughout, and let me tell ya, the grout does not look good at some spots, especially the floor. It made it very uncomfortable to step out of the shower onto and really made the room look even dirtier and dated. Oh and if you aren't used to not having central air at home, be sure to enjoy the surprisingly loud air conditioner in the room. What is this? A motel? On the bright side, the rooms had very large windows letting in lots of natural light and three layers of curtains allowing for varying window treatments. I understand that this is an older hotel now renovated, and I really want to like this hotel more, but to be honest, I was not impressed.

You took a beautiful old building and turned it in to a disaster! The rooms are terrible, cheap design looks like they did it thru Ikea. No light switch when you walk in! Beds are almost to the ground. Had dinner in the Pump room. Food and service is fantastic..but the decorating again horrible!!!! The dining room chairs are so low you need booster seats to reach the tables. YOU NEVER TAKE AWAY FROM THE STYLE OF THE BUILDING!!!!!!!!!!

Public Hotel falls under the category of the hip, trendy boutique hotels. It's located in Downtown Chicago (North River) within walking distance to plenty of restaurants and bars. Our room was beautiful with the modern contemporary décor. We got the double queen beds. The room had a fully stocked mini bar with snacks, water, wine, beer, and hard liquor. Good thing about the mini bar is it does not have motion sensor. So if you change your mind after picking it up, you don't have to worry about getting charge unlike Vegas hotels. Room came with the typical amenities and free WiFi. Also, there's a gym on the 11th floor. Ice is on the 8th and 16th floor of the hotel. There's an upscale restaurant and a bar located inside the hotel near the lobby. Staff were all uber friendly.

Very sexy boutique hotel located in the gold Coast neighborhood, which my husband and I have come to love while visiting the city..( no screaming sirens, taxis, or bachelorette parties outside our hotel). Set among beautiful brownstone homes with immaculate gardens, great for a walk while staying. Very close to Lake Michigan, you can see it as you come and go from hotel. Nice amenities, such as a couple of old school cruiser bikes to use complimentary..(first come). The library and staff there is great for espresso in the morning...great vibe with fireplace to chill and read paper or plan the day (hint no coffee makers in room, u can find that at the holiday inn). We ate at the Pump room for the first time, breakfast twice and dinner one evening...really great!!!! One of our better meals. The room is great..depends what your up for...we enjoyed the awesome bed and great linens...we often bring our own, just in case. no need here! Loved the second area in the loft...amazing down filled sofa!! The color palette was a particular fave of mine, everything is white, ecru, and cream!!!! just beautiful. Huge windows with gorgeous drapes. Bathrooms a tad small...(hard to compare to Rad Blue another fav. of ours)!@# Downside....the staff seemed a bit disconnected, young bell hop out front told us incorrectly we could reserve bikes for the entire day by calling down in the morning, neither is true, must be ready to roll when you reserve them and 4 hrs is the max. Neither criteria is unreasonable, but we did have to change our plans after finding this out!!! And the most frustrating issue happened when we were checking in, "Eric" at the front desk asked us if we would like to "upgrade to a nicer room for $25", hmmm I say, that reminds me we took advantage of an offer you had 15% off rate, $25 hotel credit, and COMPLIMENTARY upgrade if available. Clearly it was available ...he was offering it to me if I was up to paying for it!!! after he caught up with our reservation particulars, he says...oh sorry there is nothing available!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME? are you a car salesman part time??????? slightly furious with the obvious snub, and against my husbands suggestion, I get online as well as call reservations an hour later from our room and find out in fact there were upgraded rooms available for the duration of our stay!! Imagine that! Last they did not take the hotel credit off my bill and had to politely remind them of this at the front desk!! so confused about their own packages they are! Can't quite get the snub out of my crawl and after reading so many of the previous reviews, seems like they aren't paying too close attention to their "service housekeeping" It's a shame...its a cool hotel otherwise!

Trendy, aesthetically pristine hotel close to the lakefront. It feels modern with lots of stone colors: white, beige, grey-green. Rooms are clean and comfortable, have nice finishings though the walls are unfortunately quite porous. The toiletries are blah but at least match the color palette nicely.

The Public Chicago does not live up to the facade of being a high quality hotel. While the service is fine and the staff relatively nice, the amenities are not up to par. Additionally, the walls are paper thin. I was woken up prematurely 3 out of the 7 nights that I stayed here. The guests weren't being particularly loud, but I could here conversations and even the television playing. Not what you would expect from a place like this.

DO NOT STAY HERE. if i could give no stars i would. i stayed at the public chicago in February after booking it online with hotwire. we were staying over night for a birthday party. i was impressed by the lobby and generally my stay wasn't bad. i got to the room, which was as big as a closet, got ready and went out. got back pretty late and had to leave early the next morning. my real problem is that i was charged $250 additional upon checking out. i called the hotel the next day to see what the charges were and was immediately transferred to the finance department, which appears to be an answering machine,and i left a message. after a week with no return phone call, the charges go through so i call again. this time i am still not allowed to talk to a manager and i am told that the bed in my room was broken beyond repair and had to be replaced. since i merely slept on it for 6 hours and walked past it the entire time i was getting ready and it looked completely intact, you can imagine my confusion. the person on the phone told me that they couldn't tell me anymore since they didn't write the report so i asked that the manager call me back to explain. another week goes by with no call. i call back again and this time i am told the manager will call me back because they are out to lunch. i explain that i merely want this charge explained and possibly a copy of the report or picutre of the damages sent to me. i again never heard back from the manager.so in the end my $99 room ended up costing me $350. this was the worst hotel experience i have ever had. they are scam artists and have terrible customer service. i would like to use hotwire again but i am afraid of getting this hotel again so i wont.
