Hey there Macro Photography:

Wanted to share a cool and very helpful article by +Rob Sheppard.  The chapter from, "Macro Photography: From Snapshots to Great Shots", discusses the second challenge, focusing so that the shot makes sense to the viewer; and the third challenge—also related to focus—controlling depth of field when you’re going close.

Link: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2319596

Enjoy all.

Good Morning Apple OS X:

  First, great to be here.

Second, wanted to share a great new free learning article from +Arek Dreyer & +Ben Greisler. The article explains how DHCP works, including using DHCP networks, defining leases, comparing static and dynamic address assignments, and serving multiple subnets.

Article Title:  "OS X Server Essentials 10.10: Describing How DHCP Works"

  Article Link: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2314243

  Article Sample:

Comparing Static and Dynamic Address Assignments

"You can use the DHCP service to dynamically or statically assign an IPv4 address to individual computers and devices. Each computer or device’s network interface has a unique Media Access Control (MAC) address, which is a physical attribute that cannot be easily changed; it uniquely identifies the network interface. The DHCP service associates a lease with a MAC address. The MAC address is also known as a physical or network address; an example of a MAC address is c8:2a:14:34:92:10. Understand the difference between a dynamic and a static address:"

"Dynamic address—An IPv4 address is automatically assigned to a computer or device on a network. The address is typically “leased” to the computer or device for a specific period of time, after which the DHCP server either renews the lease of the address to that computer or device or makes the address available to other computers and devices on the network."

"Static address—You assign an IPv4 address to a specific computer or device on the network and rarely change it. Static addresses can be applied to a computer or device manually. Nonchanging addresses can be assigned by configuring the DHCP server to provide to a MAC address the same IPv4 address every time the computer or device with that MAC address connects to the network. This is called a reservation, and although technically it is a dynamic address, the result is the same as a static one."

Enjoy the learning everyone.

Hey Minecraft,

Sharing some great learning content with everyone.

From Cori Dusmann (@whimseysgirl), author of "A Visual Guide to Minecraft...", here is a great free article which covers redstone, Minecraft's form of electrical powe, and how players use it to build endlessly clever devices.

Article Title:  "Redstone: The Charge That Ignites Minecraft"

  Article Link: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2324462

  Article Sample:

"A key component of Minecraft, complex and largely unknown to people who don't play the game, is redstone. With the help of various other components, redstone is the Minecraft version of electricity. In many ways, it works like electrical and computer circuitry, and it can be used to make something as simple as a light that's always on, or incredibly complex automated machines and contraptions. Knowing the basics of redstone can help the uninitiated to understand some of what makes players so excited about Minecraft, by providing a glimpse into what's possible."

"While redstone doesn't follow all the laws of circuitry, it has plenty of similarities—it needs a power source, the energy flows through "redstone wiring" (like electrical wiring), and it can be used to make logic gates in order to perform specific functions."

"Redstone is an ore that can be mined, like the coal and iron mentioned earlier. A grey block with red highlights, when mined it drops (produces) redstone dust. Players use this dust to lay redstone lines that carry a signal from a power source to a device. The dust is also a key ingredient when crafting those devices, from basic lamps to repeaters and comparators that can be used to change and extend the signals."

Enjoy all.

Urban Explorations  -

Hey UrbEx:

This is pretty cool. Some great content from +Todd Sipes. The linked content walks through the specific characteristics of abandoned buildings that Todd thinks create the "sweet spot" for photography. These qualities will help any budding Urbex photographer identify the places that will almost always look great on camera.

Content Title: The Sweet Spot of Photographing Abandoned Places

  Content Link: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2315246

  Content Sample:

  Age

"The first thing I look for is age. The older a building is, the more interesting it is for me to shoot from an architectural standpoint. The age of the building will also usually determine if some of the other elements will be there. If the building is too old, chances are that the artifacts will have all been stolen and every window will be shattered. If the building has shut down recently, it will most likely look too stale or uninteresting."

"If you’re taking a picture of a school that was shut down last year, it’s just going to look like a regular school on a Sunday instead of an abandoned school. When buildings are really old but well-guarded, this theory flies out the window. However, this has been my experience 95% of the time."

"This abandoned hot springs resort was a little too far gone for my taste."

Enjoy all.

Hey Model Photography:

Wanted to share a great sample chapter from "Mastering the Model Shoot: Everything a Photographer Needs to Know Before, During, and After the Shoot" by the excellent +Frank Doorhof.

Sample Chapter: "Clothing & Styling (The Most Important Things)"

  Chapter Link: http://www.peachpit.com/articles/article.aspx?p=2156238

  Content Sample:

  Prepare for the Shoot

"A photo shoot is something that takes preparation. Make sure you know what you’re gonna do the day of the shoot. A shoot that starts with, “We’ll see what happens” often ends in disaster. Yes, I know that some people always work that way and always get great results, but trust me, it will be much better if you prepare."

"“Frank, do you always prepare for a shoot?” Ummm, well, you know. Okay, I’ll be honest. No, I don’t always prepare for a shoot, however, in some ways, I do. I know my gear, I know my lighting, and I often already have some ideas in my mind that I want to work on, so when I say to a model, “Let’s go to [a location] and we’ll see what happens,” it’s different than just going there and not knowing anything."

"In most situations, I recognize the options and know how to light it to get the result I want. But, I’ve been doing this for some time, and this has to grow over time. It doesn’t happen in one or two years. So, although I sometimes go to a shoot with an attitude of, “We’ll see what happens,” I still go prepared."

"For example, we always have some sort of idea, like doing something with a motorcycle, or doing a session with balloons in a field. Often, I have sketches of ideas, even if they are not completely worked out. However, for about 95% of my sessions, I have prepared before the actual shoot, and these are often the ones that really rock. How can you do this?"

Enjoy all.
