This picture shows one of our warehouses in Saada, northern Yemen after a coalition airstrike hit on Saturday. The warehouse contained vital humanitarian supplies.

We strongly condemn this attack. Our Chief Executive Jim Clarken said: “This is an absolute outrage particularly when one considers that we have shared detailed information with the Coalition on the locations of our offices and storage facilities.

The contents of the warehouse had no military value. It only contained humanitarian supplies associated with our previous work in Saada, bringing clean water to thousands of households.

Thankfully, no one was killed in this particular airstrike although conservative estimates put the death toll in the country as a whole, since the conflict began, at around 760 - the majority of which are civilians.”

Young Jemaa Sikar was fortunate. He and his family escaped the fighting by fleeing to Lebanon in 2012. Two years on and the situation for ordinary people still living in Syria continues to be bleak. Last year, the number of children in need of aid rose by 30% compared to 2013.

We’re working with the #WithSyria coalition to urge world leaders to stop Syria sliding into darkness. We’re demanding they boost humanitarian funding, prevent attacks on civilians and find a political solution to the conflict. Sign the petition and get governments to turn the spotlight back on Syria. https://www.withsyria.com/

Our Consumer Affairs Correspondent volunteers in an Oxfam shop. Beyond the feel-good factor, it’s a fascinating retail experience: the prices can’t be beaten and the donations range from tat to gold – literally

The world spends just $22 billion on saving lives in disaster situations. To put that into context, in 2013, we spent a cool $59 billion on ice cream alone. If this shocking statistic gives you brain freeze, please SHARE it with your friends.
