The OPCW warmly congratulates Green Cross International on the occasion of its 20th anniversary. GCI is among the OPCW's leading NGO partners, one that has made a significant contribution to building and sustaining political will for global chemical disarmament. Dr Paul Walker (pictured), the director of its Environmental Security and Sustainability (ESS) programme, has also been instrumental in developing civil society support for the OPCW as chair of the Chemical Weapons Convention Coalition of NGOs. Millions of people are displaced by conflict and persecution each year. Families are torn apart, children denied education, and hopes and dreams for the future are obliterated.
World Refugee Day reminds us that refugees and displaced people bear terrible burdens through no fault of their own. It is a day for governments to redouble their work to support refugees, to recommit themselves to the resolution of conflicts, and to make greater efforts to prevent them in the first place.
