When I first moved to the Netherlands from the USA I couldn't believe the number of cyclists and the apparent chaos in traffic - thousands of bikes, no safety gear to speak of, in any weather. But after a while you realize that having all those bikes on busy narrow roads creates a completely different and much more cooperative driving environment. As a cyclist for many years, it's the wide US roads that frighten me now.
