Remember this Guy?

This day in 1992 Denis Potvin had his number 5 raised to the rafters prior to a 6-3 win over the Calgary Flames.

What legacy did he leave behind?

Potvin was the Isles' 1st overall pick in the 1973 NHL Draft. The following spring he went on to win '73-74 Calder Memorial Trophy for best rookie.

En route to captaining the Islanders to four consecutive Stanley Cup Championships (1980-83), Potvin added three James Norris Trophies for best defenseman in  ‘76, ‘78, and ‘79 as the +NHL's best defenseman.

Denis made the NHL First All-Star team in ‘75, ‘76, ‘78, ‘79, and ’81; and made the Second All-Star team in ‘77 and ‘84. Over his 14-year career, he appeared in 9 All-Star games, skating through 1,060 regular season contests and 185 in the postseason.

To top it all off, Potvin was the first defenseman to reach the 1,000 point plateau, and his 1,052 career points ranked No. 1 all-time among defensemen at the time of his retirement in 1988.
