We recently visited Castle Sinclair Girnigoe, located outside Wick, and can't recommend it enough. There's a great walk to the Castle, which is located precariously on a cliff edge, and the scenery here is spectacular. We learned more about the history of the castle and the restoration programme currently in place.

You can read more about it here: http://www.northlinkferries.co.uk/caithness-blog/a-trip-to-castle-sinclair-girnigoe/

We had to share this fantastic video footage filmed by Darren More using a drone that really shows the castle in all it's splendour :)

With little more than four months to go until the Orkney Folk Festival, the full line-up of artists booked to appear at this year’s outing have been announced, alongside a handful of Orkney’s home-grown musicians already confirmed.

Between May 25 and 28, an estimated 50 acts, totalling over 200 musicians, will converge upon Stromness in Orkney’s West Mainland for the 35th festival.

In Orkney there’s time to stop and think about how the elements shape the islands you see before you.

To gaze out across the sea and watch as it slowly moulds the cliffs and the beaches. To hear the call of migrating birds as they fly in on the wind. To wonder how many more thousand-year-old secrets the earth under your feet could be hiding. And to imagine the stories once told around a fire, and the stories yet to be heard.

Come and visit Orkney, see the elements that shape these islands and feel them stir your soul.

We recently welcomed The NAFC Marine Centre UHI Nautical lecturer Siddhartha Paul on board the MV Hrossey as part of the Centre’s ongoing Continual Professional Development (CPD) programme.

He gave us some great feedback and many compliments all of which is very appreciated and caught up with former NAFC cadet Sam Caithness who joined the ship in Kirkwall to start his rota as Second Officer.

The 37th Shetland Folk Festival will be held between 27th and 30th April 2017 and is the UK's most northerly folk festival. Organised by a voluntary committee, the Festival prides itself in reaching out to even the most far flung areas of Shetland. Concerts are organised throughout the isles, consisting of some of the best International, British and Shetland music that the world has to offer.

If you are planning on heading up to Shetland for the festival you will be happy to hear the full line-up has now been announced!

Scotland's breathtaking vistas and spectacular cityscapes look wonderful in all seasons, of course, but there's something about winter that adds an extra touch of magic. Snowcapped mountains, glittering cities, crisp mornings and starry nights all create beautiful scenery. Take a look at these fabulous photographs and we think you'll agree that winter in Scotland is truly spectacular.

A few familiar places mentioned here in this collection of fantastic photos put together by #VisitScotland
