Myself and my wife stayed for a couple of nights last February (2008). It was at a time of the year when Northcote is very quiet. We just needed a short break I found Northcote on the internet. It seemed ideal. When we arrived, we were the only guests. We hadnt even opened the car doors before someone arrived to carry our luggage in. We walked into the reception hall of a small manor house that oozed atmsphere. A log fire was burning in the grate and the formalities were performed, not at a reception desk (they dont have one) but sitting down with a welcome drink. I know it was unusual in that we had the place to ourselves, but it just felt like it was ours, and everyone was there for us. Dare I say it, but we honestly felt like the Lord and Lady of the manor. It felt like we were at home from the very start. The room was small but well appointed and cosy with excellent en-suite facilities. Everything was "placed" and immaculately clean. We had afternoon/evening tea by the fire in the drawing room and then stepped down to the dining area for dinner. There was access to the chef if required, the menu was good (even though there were so few guests) and the food was of a very high standard. The dining was an experience in itself. Breakfast was taken in the conservatory either traditional English, or continental and again was excellent with attention to the detail. Fried eggs as requested, newspapers, condiments. The view across the small valley to the fields beyond was a compliment to the whole experience as well. The manor is set in large, well husbanded woodland with surrounding gardens. The gardens were being sensitively renovated, along with the many water features. Northcote was once occupied by a community of Benedictine monks, and the atmosphere of peace and sanctuary has been preserved and pervades the whole place. To summarise:- Northcote has a wonderful atmosphere, friendly and attentive staff, clean and sensitively decorated with an excellent attention to detail. It is a bit off the beaten track but that just adds to the charm. To put this long description into perspective, my job requires me to live in hotels for half my life so, although it is a from personal perspective I am able to make many comaparisons. I have only written so much because Northcote deserves it, and our stay and memories were and are truly exceptional.
