The Staves, en route to Justin Vernon’s Eaux Claires Festival this weekend, stopped by Minnesota Public Radio’s The Current to perform songs from their new album, If I Was. Hear the session here.
Composed of sisters Emily, Camilla and Jess Staveley-Taylor, folk-rock trio the Staves passed through the Twin Cities on their way to perform at the Eaux Claires Music and Art Festival in Wisconsin. Their connection to that area runs deep; their latest album, 'If I Was', was produced by Justin Vernon and recorded at his April Base studio. 'It was a really, really magic first trip out there,' Jess Staveley-Taylor says. Check out the full session.

"The massacre at the AME church in Charleston is just the latest in a string of racially charged events that have broken my heart," says Rhiannon Giddens. "There are a lot of things to fix in this world, but history says if we don't address this canker, centuries in the making, these things will continue to happen. No matter what level privilege you have, when the system is broken everybody loses. We all have to speak up when injustice happens. No matter what. And music is one of the best ways I know to do so."

Steve Reich's seminal work Clapping Music is now an app from the London Sinfonietta, Queen Mary University of London, and Touchpress. And for those who perfect their Clapping Music skills, there is the opportunity to pit themselves against London Sinfonietta percussionists in competitions to perform live with the ensemble.

Lianne La Havas & The Staves have made NPR's Heavy Rotation: 10 Songs Public Radio Can't Stop Playing. "La Havas is a powerhouse with a full heart, creating music that's sweeping, inspiring and downright fun," says KCRW's Anne Litt. The Staves "are incredible performers with unmatched harmonies," says WFUV's Russ Borris. Hear both here: http://www.npr.org/2015/07/28/423603470/heavy-rotation-10-songs-public-radio-cant-stop-playing

Rhiannon Giddens has written a song in response to the shooting at the Emanuel AME church in Charleston, SC. The video has premiered via NPR. "Its genre delineations apply more to the human condition than to music," says NPR. "Grief like a drum, strength like a choir and hope like a single voice rising are the only vocabulary needed—and language anyone can understand." Watch the video here.
The versatile Irish/country/blues singer gathers a choir in a North Carolina church for an impassioned call to action.

The Staves' new album, If I Was, "is perhaps the most achingly beautiful album released this year," exclaims WFUV, naming it this week's New Dig. "Discovering toughness and tenderness concurrently on this handsome release, The Staves are bright stars illuminating the pop music landscape."
