The French government announced today a plan to hold web companies accountable for any extremist messages they may host, Bloomberg reports. French president Francois Hollande wants to introduce a law that would make companies like Google and Facebook "accomplices" in crimes of hate speech if users post content the government deems extremist. http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/27/7921463/google-facebook-accountable-for-hate-speech-france

Apple announced staggering quarterly earnings today, posting a record $18 billion in profiton the sale of 74.5 million iPhones. Those sales figures are global, but there is one part of the world that is far and away the biggest driver of Apple's growth: China. Revenue in Greater China was up 157 percent over last quarter and 70 percent year over year, more than double the acceleration seen anywhere else and more than three time the sales growth in Asia or the Americas. http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/27/7924701/china-is-the-biggest-driver-of-apples-insane-earnings-growth

Microsoft's latest Windows 10 preview offers up a good look at what the company is planning for the future of laptops and PCs. While Windows 8 was never received well by consumers or businesses, Windows 10 aims to make things a lot more familiar. We saw the new Start Menu when Microsoft released its first Windows 10 preview back in October, but things are changing rapidly. There's more built-in apps, user interface changes, and a whole new touch mode designed for 2-in-1 laptops and tablets. http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/28/7927109/windows-10-features-hands-on

Advancements in technology affect various aspects of our lives, in both positive and negative ways. New survey results, however, show who's witnessing tech's drawbacks the most — Internet users in countries with developed economies.
According to a new report Microsoft released last week ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Internet users in developing countries have a more positive view on the impact of technology. On the other hand, users in developed countries say technology has decreased trust in the media and contributed to declines in fitness, among other disadvantages. http://mashable.com/2015/01/27/tech-impact-developing-world/

Data breaches are everywhere. Be it Target, Home Depot or JPMorgan Chase, millions of consumers have lost personal data to hackers.
Personal data can be anything from an email address or phone number to something like your birthday or home street — things hackers want to get their hands on. IBM has developed a cloud-based cryptogram that it's calling the Identity Mixer, and it makes it so that the services we use never even have access to our most sensitive personal information. http://mashable.com/2015/01/28/ibm-identity-mixer/
