To address missed instructional time from last week’s snowfall, Newport News Public Schools has designated Monday, January 29, a regular school day for all students. The date was originally a Professional Development Day for staff on the 2017-2018 school year calendar.

State law requires all public school students to attend school 180 days or 990 hours in any school year. With the added instructional time on January 29, NNPS will fulfill the state requirement for instructional hours. Through extended learning opportunities including afterschool instructional programs and Saturday School, many NNPS students benefit from additional learning time.

In addition, the high school exam schedule is revised:

Monday, January 22 - 6th Period Exams
Tuesday, January 23 - 3rd and 5th Period Exams
Wednesday, January 24 - 2nd and 4th Period Exams
Thursday, January 25 - 1st and 7th Period Exams

High schools will dismiss at 10:40 a.m. Tuesday, January 23 through Thursday, January 25.

Please note that Friday, January 26, will remain a teacher workday; students do not report to school. Monday, January 29, will be the first day of the second semester and will be an “A” or “odd” day for middle and high school students.
