Ford Escape First Drive
With sales of its Ford Kuga only accounting for about 3 to 4 per cent of the mid-sized SUV market in Australia, Ford has decided to rebadge the all-new Kuga as an Escape in the hope that nostalgia will make Australians think more favourably about its SUV range.

201 Ford Everest RWD first Drive
The much lauded 4x4 is now available in rear-wheel drive. The question is, who will buy it?

This should be a wake-up call for people tempted to take on excessive debt to purchase a new car.

This Focus RS is the new version of the one released back in 2010. It has more power and torque and now features AWD. Available exclusively as a five-door the new RS is bigger than the model that precedes it, and even better, it's cheaper. It's so popular the wait list is well into next year.

Volkswagen Tiguan 132 TFSI Comfortline is the mid-spec model in the all-new Tiguan range. The Tiguan is Volkswagen's baby SUV, although the second generation has certainly grown up.

Should I consider one?

While the Astra is perhaps not as premium a product as Holden is trying to make out (and some customers might baulk at the starting price), it's a sight more desirable than a Hyundai i30 or a Toyota Corolla and better value than a Mazda3 or VW Golf. The Astra is back.

Should I buy one?

A back-to-back test drive of the Amarok with any of its competitors will make a convincing case for purchase (although it needs to, given the high asking price and inevitable concerns about ongoing costs and reliability). As a combined package of power, comfort, refinement and load space, the new Amarok is almost without peer.

The old adage 'good things come in small packages' has never been truer than with modern micro cars. Forget phrases like 'built to a price' or 'basic transport' – our three test vehicles offer much more than a small footprint, fuel economy and a tight turning circle.

So, is the traditional SUV still relevant? That depends on your lifestyle! If you're going to spend more time off the beaten track, then the ruggedness of the RAV4 becomes part of its appeal. Not to mention Toyota's reputation for bulletproof reliability, especially if you're planning on exploring the great outdoors.
