Unfortunately I think someone with this kind of mental state would have figured out a way to down a plane eventually. It's not like it was a freak accident. He wanted to do it, he knew how, he did it. I'm sure whatever automation is put on there will be still be some way that a lone pilot could bring the plane out of the air. Requiring two person integrity (a crew of three, only one can be gone) would add a substantial layer of safety.
