When Vincent was diagnosed with stage 2 #ProstateCancer, his doctor and #urologist urged him to see the Robotics surgical team at Mount Sinai. We came highly recommended because we are pioneering an advanced technique. At most hospitals, the surgeon sends a biopsy to the lab and has to wait seven days or more to know if all the cancer was excised. Mount Sinai is one of the few hospitals in the United States to use comprehensive real-time #pathology, which gives the surgeons lab results before they complete the procedure. And likewise, they know if the surgery was successful before it is over, not a week later. This allows for a much more precise surgery with less nerve damage and a much lower risk of sexual dysfunction and incontinence. Because when it comes to prostate cancer surgery, you want to know if you are done operating before you are done operating. #ForYouForLife

The Mount Sinai Health System’s Information Technology Department has created and recently launched an award-winning electronic medical record database, known as the Health Information Exchange (HIE), which will continue to be rolled out to Health System providers over the coming months. The new web-based portal unifies data in real time and will give Mount Sinai clinicians and affiliated physicians an unprecedented ability to review patient data without delay in order to make timely and accurate medical decisions and reduce the incidence and costs of unnecessary or duplicate tests. About 1.4 million adults in the United States report they are transgender, according to a recent analysis of federal and state data. That figure is twice the previous estimate, and as awareness has increased, the health care system has begun scrambling to meet their needs. Mount Sinai Health System recently opened a Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, providing #healthcare for transgender individuals that incorporates primary care, transition care, and behavioral health in an affordable and accessible program.

Though awareness of the nation’s transgender population has grown, medical networks are still scrambling to catch up with that group’s highly specialized needs.

The hip and knee program at Mount Sinai Beth Israel in New York City is shining these days, having just earned The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification for Total Hip and Total Knee Replacement. This is the only hospital in New York City to receive this certification for an orthopedic program. “This entire process was a team effort, and our success during this review is a reflection of the outstanding staff that we have here in the #orthopedics department,” said Peter McCann, MD, chair of the department of orthopaedic surgery at Mount Sinai Beth Israel. “It can be quite an ordeal to see a doctor in a hospital if you are a frail older adult,” says Linda DeCherrie, MD, Associate Professor, Medicine, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. “Patients are much happier not to have to go through that. In a home, you can get a better picture of what’s going on.” Learn more via The New York Times: http://mshs.co/AsgB3052St0
Home medical care, a practice from the past, can cost less than hospital care. But bringing it back faces numerous challenges.

With thousands of mobile health apps available to consumers, there is no standardized way for providers to find clinically proven apps that can be easily delivered to patients. Through RxUniverse, a new platform developed by researchers at the Mount Sinai Health System, the institution aims to be the first to address
this problem. “Apps have typically been recommended to patients verbally, but with the myriad of mobile health apps on the market, many with no proven evidence, it is a challenge for providers and patients,” says Ashish Atreja, MD, MPH, Chief Technology Innovation and Engagement Officer in the Department of Medicine, and Director of Sinai AppLab. About 30 percent of #transgender patients report delaying or not seeking care due to discrimination, according to a report published in the June edition of the journal Medical Care. One in four say they were denied equal treatment in #healthcare settings. The Mount Sinai Health System culturally trains all employees at its seven hospitals who have any contact with transgender patients and in March opened the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, offering integrated care. "Compared to where we were when I started trans work in the early '90s, we have made tremendous progress," said Barbara Warren, PsyD, director for LGBT Programs and Policies in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion at Mount Sinai Health System. Tanya Walker had lung cancer and was coughing up blood, but she says her emergency room doctor kept asking about her genitals. She experienced a stigma shared by many transgender people.

"A recent survey from the National Association of Mental Illness that analyzed 84 insurance plans in 15 states found that a patient attempting to obtain mental health services was twice as likely to be denied coverage by a private insurer as a patient seeking medical or surgical care," Kenneth L. Davis, MD, President and CEO of the Mount Sinai Health System on how the need for behavioral health care outweighs its availability via this Forbes article: http://mshs.co/DAkM3054Ix6
The need for behavioral health care outweighs its availability. We must properly implement parity in care.
