When Vincent was diagnosed with stage 2 #ProstateCancer, his doctor and #urologist urged him to see the Robotics surgical team at Mount Sinai. We came highly recommended because we are pioneering an advanced technique. At most hospitals, the surgeon sends a biopsy to the lab and has to wait seven days or more to know if all the cancer was excised. Mount Sinai is one of the few hospitals in the United States to use comprehensive real-time #pathology, which gives the surgeons lab results before they complete the procedure. And likewise, they know if the surgery was successful before it is over, not a week later. This allows for a much more precise surgery with less nerve damage and a much lower risk of sexual dysfunction and incontinence. Because when it comes to prostate cancer surgery, you want to know if you are done operating before you are done operating. #ForYouForLife

With thousands of mobile health apps available to consumers, there is no standardized way for providers to find clinically proven apps that can be easily delivered to patients. Through RxUniverse, a new platform developed by researchers at the Mount Sinai Health System, the institution aims to be the first to address
this problem. “Apps have typically been recommended to patients verbally, but with the myriad of mobile health apps on the market, many with no proven evidence, it is a challenge for providers and patients,” says Ashish Atreja, MD, MPH, Chief Technology Innovation and Engagement Officer in the Department of Medicine, and Director of Sinai AppLab. The new web-based portal unifies data in real time and will give Mount Sinai clinicians and affiliated physicians an unprecedented ability to review patient data without delay in order to make timely and accurate medical decisions and reduce the incidence and costs of unnecessary or duplicate tests. About 1.4 million adults in the United States report they are transgender, according to a recent analysis of federal and state data. That figure is twice the previous estimate, and as awareness has increased, the health care system has begun scrambling to meet their needs. About 30 percent of #transgender patients report delaying or not seeking care due to discrimination, according to a report published in the June edition of the journal Medical Care. One in four say they were denied equal treatment in #healthcare settings. The Mount Sinai Health System culturally trains all employees at its seven hospitals who have any contact with transgender patients and in March opened the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, offering integrated care. "Compared to where we were when I started trans work in the early '90s, we have made tremendous progress," said Barbara Warren, PsyD, director for LGBT Programs and Policies in the Office for Diversity and Inclusion at Mount Sinai Health System. "A recent survey from the National Association of Mental Illness that analyzed 84 insurance plans in 15 states found that a patient attempting to obtain mental health services was twice as likely to be denied coverage by a private insurer as a patient seeking medical or surgical care," Kenneth L.
