Norma Pinto didn’t have to choose between a leading respiratory center or a leading academic medical institution. Her constrictive bronchiolitis continued to worsen for over 20 years, despite the efforts of her local hospital. So she came to the new +Mount Sinai – National Jewish Health Respiratory Institute. This unique partnership is a model for state-of-the-art, personalized medicine for the treatment of respiratory disease.
Here, she was diagnosed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians. The team prescribed medication to strengthen Norma’s compromised immune system, and enrolled her in a clinical trial of a new drug which improved her breathing. One year later, the progression of the disease stopped. And Norma’s grandchildren were thrilled to have their playmate back.

Early symptoms such as a simple change to ordinary bowel habits, are often easily missed, said David Greenwald, MD, Director of Clinical Gastroenterology, Endoscopy. At The Mount Sinai Hospital, where we recently performed the first #transplant of an #HIV -positive #kidney to an HIV-positive recipient in New York State — and only the second in the nation — we currently have 90 people waiting for a kidney who are HIV positive, and already, more than 60 have given their consent to receive one from an HIV-positive donor. This is also a fantastic news for for everyone else who is waiting for a kidney, because it will cut down everyone's wait time. The Hope Act means hundreds of HIV-positive patients receiving kidneys from HIV-positive donors will help reduce everyone's wait time.

“Most of my patients assume they have to take prenatal #supplements , but the average person is able to fulfill their (nutritional) needs just by natural intake,” explained Dr. Joanne Stone, director of Maternal Fetal Medicine. Nearly 8 in 10 Americans admitted that they would feel better and more prepared for the day if they had an extra hour of sleep. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say we’re in the midst of a national epidemic over lack of sleep—which is causing increased anxiety and stress, poor mental performance, and negative physical health issues. We’re joining Sharecare in a ‪#‎yourbestrest‬ Twitter Chat to discuss sleep hygiene and habits, sleep disorders, and the health implications of sleep. Ask your sleep questions using #yourbestrest and join us on Twitter Thursday, July 21, from 12-3 p.m. ET!
