Years ago, Tzu-Chieh โ€œZijayโ€ Tang and his peers in his high school biology club would gather after school to go on a nature hike into the mountains of Taipei, Taiwan. "As Hurricane Florence comes barreling down on the east coast, we consider why we can predict a solar eclipse centuries in advance, but we can only predict the weather about a week or two in advance. Can a small-scale movement, like the flap of a butterflyโ€™s wing, influence large-scale systems like hurricanes?

Learn about how Edward Lorenz's chaos theory affected our understanding of the weather prediction and the universe from the researchers and MIT EAPS
scientists who worked alongside him.
