Further price reduction strategy from google. Still going to advise clients to stay with premium tier unless cost is a driving factor.

Linux 3.7 i915 blank or corrupt screen on boot lenovo ideapad y480

Quick note for the googs to index as I couldn't find any other post with the same symptoms. I'll write this up properly and post a permalink later.

My Lenovo Ideapad Y480 produced a blank screen on boot with 3.7-stable - usual workarounds (nomodeset, etc) just produced a corrupt screen on boot instead of blank.

3.6-stable does not have the problem, and 3.6.11 works fine - time for a git bisect session. Tracked down problem to changeset a57f7f9175b8ccbc9df83ac13860488913115de4 ACPICA: Add Windows8/Server2012 string for _OSI method.

Solution: added acpi_osi="!Windows 2012" to grub and get a working laptop again.

I'll take a look at my DSDT over the weekend and try to get to the bottom of the problem.

I am glad to see others supporting one of my favourites +Electronic Frontier Foundation and the fight against software patents. I have no problem with copyright and trademarks for products but patenting algorithms is just fundamentally wrong.

My new Lenovo laptop arrived yesterday and I spent 30 mins playing with Windows 8. I quite like it, although the practicalities of using with an external mouse are horrible. As anyone who has seen my Linux/OSX/Windows installs will know I eschew the desktop metaphor anyway so an abbreviated set of applications readily accessible works well for me, but I guess I am in the minority.

Anyway, about to replace HDD with a new SSD and install Linux for the first time in years; usually I just migrate LVM volumes between machines but I have a suspicion that some of my 6 year old configs may not be optimal for a 2012 laptop. Time to install latest Debian wheezy beta and maybe I'll just migrate the home volume later.

Finally got some time to work on an updated firmware for my +SparkFun Electronics geiger counter with LCD last night, just in time for Nuclear Science merit badge class on Saturday. Armed only with a +mophie  powerstation pro and the geiger counter the scouts will be able to perform some experiments, measure counts/second and counts/minute without needing a computer.

Firmware source can be found at http://github.com/memes/geiger and available under CC attribution license.
