Whoa, that looks fast. What kind of speeds can you top out at on this track?

It's the back parking lot at PPIR. We don't shift out of 2nd gear once we're in it but we sometimes will hit the rev limiter which will sometimes have us around 70mph before slamming the brakes on for a 15mph corner. Basically it's like a roller coaster ride but we get to control the "go" pedal.

Why is it that the Internet of the future is always just the Internet we already had in college? — Ian Hill in an email recently It’s odd to remember how much of the modern “cloud” world worked better a decade before in the context of having a Unix account at a large university.

“The only copy protection I need is the fact that tomorrow’s comic doesn’t exist yet and my brain’s the only place that bakes that cookie.” — Richard Stevens of dieselsweeties. Really, I think that state of mind is all the copy protection any creator needs these days. Awhile ago I was listening to a podcast interview with Patton Oswalt, and the discussion turned to other comedians who had stolen his jokes. He basically said he didn’t care. Which ...

However, Louis' seemed like mostly talk, since the terms of use for that endeavor certainly forbade many things that he said users should be able to do (poor communication between him and his legal reps. I suppose). And certainly the rest of stand-up cares about stealing jokes; the way Carlos Mencia has been ostracized is a good example (I highly recommend the two Marc Maron interviews with Mencia).

Ditto. Something good to keep in mind when I'm playing some kid board game for the millionth time with her.
Late last night, inspecting Santa’s handiwork, a simple thought occurred to me. A decade or so from now, when, say, I’m waiting for my son to come home from college for his winter break, and, when he does, he wants to spend his time going out with his friends — how much will I be willing to pay then to be able to go back in time, for one day, to now, when he’s eight years old, he wants to go to movies and play games and build Lego kits with me, a...

My son starts community college in a couple of weeks, and then he'll be headed off to a "real" school in the fall. I swear I was just coaching his pee-wee baseball team a couple of years ago, but in reality it's been 12 years. When they are still young you can't fathom how quickly they grow up.

I bring this to your attention not just because I really enjoy David Malki!’s Wondermark, but because, sometimes, there’s a better way — Calendars: SOLD OUT. Engineering: STILL LOUD. A few people have written to tell me that they saw a shirt with this same slogan in the Signals catalog, or on their website. They are right to think that it was done without my knowledge or approval — I’d never let a design this ugly go out: [...] This is a tricky...

My last Google Reader share. Bye Reader.
As I backed out I raised my hand to push the button on the garage door remote. The homeless man who had been laying next to our garage thought I was waving at him and he gave a small wave back. Instinctively my hand, still raised after pushing the button, gave him a wave. It was a long wave. Longer than was called for and with a familiarity I would reserve for a friend. And he, looking uncomfortable with the realization of what was happening, gav...

This completely blows my mind. Back in 2006 I was writing a post on O'Reilly Radar about inspiring engineering teams, and I remembered having heard a quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry that summed up the idea I wanted to discuss: If you want to build a ship, don't drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea. I searched for the quote and found it on Wikiquote under t...

Awesome digging Kevin, I've pinged Marc Hedlund since he was the original author of the Radar post about this.

"Bloggers are famous enough to have stalkers, but not famous enough to have bodyguards." —Danny O'Brien Everyone thinks they want a million Twitter followers and a million pageviews a day on their blog and the incredible high that it must be to walk around in the world knowing you're "internet famous." Yes, being famous among dozens has its privileges, but it also has a flip side netizens rarely discuss. I passed 200,000 followers on Twitter this...

Last week, the file-distribution site Megaupload launched a $3 million music video. It features the likes of Kanye West, Snoop Dogg, Kim Kardashian, and many others offering testimonials Megaupload, set to a moderately catchy tune. It’s safe to say that music companies were not happy: they’ve been saying for months that Megaupload and other “cyberlockers” are blatant infringers making a mockery of copyright law. So when the video hit YouTube, UMG...

This is an interesting one. I'm especially interested in YouTube's note that they reinstated the video. It's troubling that you still lose video uptime on a spurious claim, but I get the feeling this isn't quite as sinister as Mich on the Net is making it out to be.

I tried to read this review on my own new Galaxy Nexus and everything Danny says about difficulties in the browser with rendering text were true. It was really difficult to read without scrolling and zooming constantly. Also, I ran into the same weird icon confusion in gmail as well as the OS itself.
My favorite Galaxy Nexus review to date. ★

the send icon is the same in the Google + app. I get that they want to save on screen real estate so you can do more without submenus, but they either need a quick tutorial, or names for the icons that appear when you long press.

Frankly, I don't want to give up my dedicated buttons. On the plus side, I bet many of the ics issues will be fixed in cyanogenMod 9.
