Forty years ago, we were introduced to the lightsaber as Star Wars swept across the universe. In the years since, we have developed a similar kind of directed energy: laser weapon systems. While we haven’t encountered Darth Vader yet, these laser and sensor systems can offer us speed-of-light protection against small, incoming threats. Learn about this Star Wars technology clone and three others: http://lmt.co/2rdYQqO

Did you know traditional airships still use a cable and pulley system to steer? We couldn't believe it either. There has to be a better way! Now there is. When the Skunk Works team began development of the Hybrid Airship nearly 20 years ago they pulled knowledge from our fixed-wing aircraft to build digital flight controls, or a fly-by-wire system, into the airship’s standard systems. Instead of a literal balloon in the wind, airship operators now have a four-wheel drive bus with power steering. Talk about innovation. Find out how we did it: http://lmt.co/2mVxzqL

Images from the Geostationary Lightning Mapper mark the first time lightning will be tracked continuously from space. From 22,300 miles out, that’s a heck of a zoom lens! Check out our first peek at what lightning looks like from space, plus the first images from the Solar Ultraviolet Imager, which also is aboard NOAA’s GOES-16 satellite that we built. http://lmt.co/2lAR2wP

Ever think of what it takes to mimic the sun’s forces in space? Try a “gun” that shoots out 12-million-m.p.h. protons. Our atomic particle accelerator is a key instrument for the new Space Plasma and Radiation Center (SPARC) at our labs in Silicon Valley. The accelerator and the other new testing machines are extremely precise. For example, the electron accelerator shoots electrons to 66 percent the speed of light, and all the instruments are positioned to less than 100 microns, many times smaller than the width of a human hair. http://lmt.co/2m9cEQP
