The same ideas that got Marguerite Porete labeled a heretic are alive and well in the twenty-first-century church. On the blog, Kevin DeYoung mentions four problems with her free-spirit theology that seem particularly relevant to our situation today.
Why reintroduce this long-forgotten, little-known French mystic? Because the same ideas that got her labeled a heretic are alive and well in the twenty-first-century church. Let me mention four problems with her free-spirit theology that seem particularly relevant to our situation today.

Is the church a building or a people or both? Listen today on Renewing Your Mind with R.C. Sproul, as we begin a series on the meaning and mission of the church.
To understand the meaning and mission of the church, we must first define exactly what the church is. Is the church a building or a people or both? If we speak of the church as a building, then what kind of building? If the church is people, then what kind of people? Beginning this new series to help us understand who and what the church is and the mission she is called to, Dr. Sproul starts off with this message entitled

Founded by R.C. Sproul to equip Christians to articulate what they believe & why they believe it.
Introduction
We’re dedicated to helping Christians know what they believe, why they believe it, how to live it, and how to share it.

In order to grow, we need wise instruction from the mind of God about how to think and what we should think about. God calls us to be transformed by His Spirit rather than conformed to the pattern of thinking in this world. And the way of transformation is through the renewing of our minds. It’s our goal to proclaim God’s holiness, teach His Word with clarity, and see lives changed as we dig deeper into the rich soil of God’s truth.

In 1971, as it is today, the world was filled with challenges to biblical faith. Christians who sought to be equipped to answer these challenges had few options short of going to seminary. R.C. Sproul saw the need to offer a bridge of learning for the growing Christian but in a way that was accessible and practical, and Ligonier Ministries was born.

Our educational mission continues today through our books, monthly magazine, broadcasts, conferences, teaching series, music, and website with a focus on reformed theology. The appetite for these materials continues to grow both domestically and internationally. We believe that when the Bible is taught clearly, God is seen in all of His majesty and holiness — hearts are conquered, minds are renewed, communities are transformed.

Our hope is for Ligonier Ministries to become a trusted resource to help stimulate Gospel conviction and courage. We are excited about the future because we serve a great and sovereign God. And we know what we are called to do.
