UPDATE - Much better experience after the first noght. enough for me to change my review from 2 to 4 star. I requested too change the room from handicap to normal room. The morning front desk staff and the manager were much more friendly. In fact, they "upgraded" our room. Let's just say it was much more functional for nonhadipcap persons but not that much dufferent in size and decore. Original - All of the negative review are TRUE!!! This is our first night and it has not started well. The front desk person gave us a handicap accessible room that is not so convenient and her tone on the phone made both my wife and I feel like we were unwelcome and in fact bothering her. Here is hoping that things will get much better that I will actually revise the review at the end of our stay.

You will like this place if you like to have a big party right outside the window of your room. Like some of the other reviews say, this hotel has parties on the patio in between the two wings of rooms all the time. This hotel is overpriced and they nickel and dime you on everything, including a $30 resort fee apparently for the tiny pool, and a $30 per night valet parking charge. However, the service was generally good.

Dear Steve, Thank you for providing valuable feedback on your recent stay at our beachside resort. I am certainly disappointed that your stay was not all that it could have been. This is a matter that should have been easily addressed and rectified by immediately moving you to a quieter room at your request. Our $22 resort fee provides our guests with a business center and services, including copying faxing and printing, free Wi-Fi, and access to our fitness center and tennis courts along with many other benefits. Should you give us the opportunity to show you that we a property unlike any other, I would be happy to personally oversee your return visit. Kind Regards, Resort Operations Manager

7/17/14 Outrageously loud music played outdoors for four hours not ending until 11 p.m. disturbing the peace to the point that countless residents of Del Mar within many blocks could not sleep or enjoy their homes even indoors. The inappropriately loud music began again in the evening on 7/18/14. L'Auberge is an asset to the community but is, in this case, being an inconsiderate neighbor to hundreds in this little town. After calling the hotel on 7/17 and twice getting the unhelpful response from two female employees "We always have this event once a year." I wrote the response above. After that I once more called reaching an employee named Mac. He listened, understood the problem, said he'd speak to the managment team and suggest that the music be in a room without the doors to the outside open. Within a half hour the music could no longer be heard and this side of town could sleep. We thank Mac for his quick and skillful resolution for this problem.

Booked a room for a business trip. Was forced to cancel due to the death of someone that needed to be involved in the meeting. Since their cancellation policy was 7 days, I was out of luck for a refund since it was 4 days until the stay. I asked them if they would please hold my deposit as a credit for future use, as I was absolutely going to need the room again. They told me they could due to the circumstances. I went to rebook the room and got lucky and spoke to the same woman that I cancelled with, and was told that she never told me they could retain the deposit for a future use and even if they had agreed to it (it would have required a supervisor's approval), it would have needed to be used before the close of the year. This was ridiculous. One would expect a bit more customer service at a resort such as this. I will never stay here and will tell everyone I know to avoid it at all cost.

Note: This review is for the waterfall terrace at the hotel. Came here to watch the sunset and have some drinks and food with a friend. We sat outside and were granted a beautiful view of the ocean and a gorgeous sunset. It's in inside of a hotel, and have a luxury modern feel. Starting with the cocktails, I got the Prohibition which was delicious and well balanced with a strong flavor. If you're into whiskey at al I would highly recommend this drink, it's smoother than you'd think while still packing quite a pinch. My friend got the hibiscus margarita which was a bit sweet but still quite good. Our second drink were glasses of the house Pinot and Cab, both of which were very smooth and well balanced for the varietal of wine. We tried the guacamole which I would say was solid but standard, it suited what I was looking for but wasn't anything very special. The margarita pizza was so good, I would HIGHLY recommend it. The balsamic reduction was incredible. Overall, you're going to get good food and drinks here with a beautiful view, and you're going to pay appropriate money for it. It's a great spot for dates for sure!

5 Star price for a dirty 3 Star hotel. Disappointing! Honestly, I regret not paying more attention to the negative reviews of this hotel before I made a reservation. The negative points were accurate. In a nutshell, for $590 for one night (including ridiculous fees such as $29 for valet, $22 for resort fee) you get: 1)dirty fabrics on sofas & chairs in both the public areas and the rooms 2)dirty carpets 3)dirty walls, doors and switches 4)broken fireplace 5)"premium" rooms only have a d i s t a n t view of the ocean from the far corner of small balcony (which has really uncomfortable chairs) 6)no staff elevator so we were often bumping into the valet or cleaning staff with their carts in the one slow, small elevator 7)aloof staff. The longer story is that we had requested a specific area of the hotel (based on reviewer suggestions). Our first room was not where the reservations agent indicated it would be. Instead, this "really nice room", according to the front desk, was a half story above a large concrete deck where a wedding was about to commence. We would have had absolutely NO privacy unless we shut the blinds and there would have been a lot of noise. Really? For $580/night?! The front desk did change the room but acted miffed about it. We had plans to stay for two nights but chose to go home early instead. While the architecture/design elements and location were pluses, they definitely did not outweigh the negatives. We did make the best of the situation. We enjoyed the beautiful beach & weather that weekend. But, in retrospect, wished we had spent our hard-earned money somewhere, make that, anywhere else.

Dear Guest, Thank you for providing valuable feedback on your recent stay. I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed the resort’s architecture and the location. Still, I would like to apologize on behalf of our team for your experience during your stay. The conditions you described are not to our standards and I have forwarded your comments to the appropriate departments, which always welcomes suggestions for improvement. Again, I extend my apologies and hope that this atypical experience does not deter you from visiting us in the future. Kind Regards, Resort Operations Manager

I'm usually not a complainer - however for being a 5 star resort it really fell short. First of all they forgot my bottle of wine that I had ordered when booking the room. It never showed up, and wasn't on the bill. However the concierge emailed me prior to checking in to ask what time to bring the bottle up. Anyway, not a big deal. However, I was looking for a nice - QUIET time with my wife. I reserved the suite that had an ocean view in order to sit out on the balcony and enjoy the ocean breeze and sounds. There was a wedding that was going on - about 15ft from my balcony, and they partied it up all night long. We ordered a movie to help drown out the noise, and the audio didn't match what was playing on the screen - so that was a bust. I could of overlooked the noise if they would of either disclosed beforehand or offered a discount, but there was nothing offered when I brought it up. The spa was nice, although my wife mentioned the steam room in the ladies area wasn't working and had a whole bunch of towels thrown into it.
