“They came with horses,” Amelia Boynton Robinson recalled. “They came with nightsticks.” On March 7, 1965, Alabama state troopers blocked civil rights demonstrators who had just crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma. Boynton Robinson, then a middle-aged black woman, was tear-gassed and beaten and slumped unconscious on the side of the road. The troopers attacked the marchers in events that became known as "Bloody Sunday."

Learn more about the woman now called “Queen Mother” and join us for a look back at the historical Civil Rights Movement and a look ahead at the modern movement 50 years after Selma at latimes.com/selma.

Voter turnout in the city of Los Angeles is dismal. In yesterday's election, less than 10% of registered voters cast ballots. So The Times went to several polling places and asked L.A. voters about their reasons for voting.

Did you vote? Tell us why (or why not). #LAvotes   #elections2015

The few (animal rights critics) outweigh the wants of the many. A new trend in American society. Hey, just like the downfall of the Roman Empire.

Not all cookies are create equally. Thin Mints, for example, look and taste different depending on what side of the great Girl Scout cookie divide you fall. Two different bakeries divide the country, both with different recipes. And which is better? That depends on whom you ask. Find out where your cookies are coming from: http://fw.to/iPJ5FqR
