This is a slightly different post to usual so I hope you can bear with me.

These beautiful people are my dear friends Jen and Dan with their adorable son Ari. I met Jen on my very first day of university, we were both lost on campus and trying to find where our lecture theatre was. It's been over 17 years since that day and we've had periods of our lives where we've been in touch and not been in touch but our friendship is now stronger than ever and she's one of the people I truly cherish spending time with.

And Dan is an extension of Jen - he's kind, endlessly optimistic, considerate, understanding and wonderful company. Jen and Dan have truly lived life the way that it should be lived - they've travelled the world, done so much good and experienced some life changing things together but nothing as amazing as the arrival of Ari a little over 5 months ago.

On Wednesday, I was truly shocked to hear that Dan has been diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in his foot, Malignant Peripheral Nerve Sheath Tumor. Having worked in cancer research before, I can see that the numbers for this type of tumour aren't great but the good news is that a PET scan showed Dan's cancer hasn't metastasised (spread to other parts of his body). Due to the fact that chemotherapy has limited success with type of tumour, the best option available is amputation of Dan's leg below the knee which still means he'll require years of testing to ensure that the cancer isn't growing somewhere else. It's a drastic measure to take and not a perfect solution by any means, but currently the best way to address the situation.

Dan is a web developer who currently works as a contractor and Jen, who works in sustainability, will be on unpaid maternity leave for another 7 months. Having recently bought their first house to bring up Ari, they're now in a bit of a tough spot and this is where we can help.

The reality is, the world is filled with suffering and sadness and it's impossible to help everyone. But when that sadness comes to your front door, it becomes difficult to do anything but and that's how I feel right now - I just want to do whatever I can. One of Dan and Jen's friends Andrea has set up a GoFundMe (with subsequent blessings from Jen and Dan) to support the family though Dan's treatment and recovery. He will no doubt need to remain off work for a while and the amputation means he will need a prosthesis (which in typical Dan humour means he'll have a "Tesla level burning man bionic art leg that is better than a real one"). Additionally, there will need to be numerous modifications of their house and car to allow him to safely and comfortable use them. To top this all, they will require repeated 200km round trips to Sydney for medical treatment/follow ups so there's a lot involved with that as well - especially with a 5 month old in tow.

They've spent so much of their lives giving to others and they've not asked for a single thing in return which is the reason why I want to help them now. Kristen and I have decided that we will make a contribution towards the fund and wanted to offer that option to you as well. I only wish that our sentiments and good will alone were enough to make everything better but in the meantime, I know that every little bit that is raised will help.

So I'm going to leave you with a few words from Dan and the link to the GoFundMe with the hope that you are fortunate enough in life to be able to spare a little of what you have to help people like Dan, Jen and Ari. And if your support of Dan and Jen is only being able to share this post, that's an amazing thing in itself and will be much appreciated.

"If you have to get bad news, spring is the best time for it, so much potential and optimism in the air, so easy to be present and in the world and accept things as they are. The house is full of nice flowers and things from the garden, it smells ridiculous. Ive got the most amazing friends, family, wife and child, and a home that i love, my employer has been super supportive and accomodating. I’ve never felt so happy, alive and fulfilled, if this is all i ever get then i am so grateful but i know there is more good livin to come :) I don’t identify with this illness, it doesn’t define me any more than having the flu would define me, I’m still the same Dan, just got some hard stuff to go through."

Thank you in advance for your support and I wish you all good health and happiness.

In order to be truly successful at something, you need to make sacrifices – you need to make time, find energy and to push yourself out of your comfort zone. But it can push too far and your life will suffer. On the blog tonight is an article I wrote a little while ago about just that.

Gary and Trudy are truly beautiful souls who had their lives touched by tragedy in the year leading up to their wedding. But through the grief they struggled through and their heartwarming story is on the blog: http://www.lakshalperera.com/2016/01/gary-trudys-elegant-melbourne-wedding/

If you want to hear Kelly and Brandan's story, I need to prepare you and tell you it'll take a while. Their's is a story of a fight against illness and of coming back from the brink, over and over again, only to find that love is what helps you fight something that wants to keep you apart.
I'm pretty moved by this wedding, mainly because I feel a deep sense of fondness for Kelly and Brandan. While it's hard to be enthusiastic about sharing a sad story, the happiness lies in their love, union and acceptance of living each day and moment with passion and happiness. What better lesson can the rest of us learn than that?

Caroline and Mike first started dating in 2002 when they were 13. Yes, 13. A relationship at that age wasn't necessarily an easy one, especially considering their strong Vietnamese cultural heritage. But Caroline's sister spoke during their wedding reception with tears falling down her face and I think she said it best.

"I know that the start of your relationship wasn't easy, but I am so happy that you persisted because look at where you are today."
