The Penguin Belly-Slide

I was walking around the sea ice in Antarctica when I would see these trails all over the place.  I had no idea what they were! I was by a scientist, and he told me, "Oh! Those are the trails made by penguins when they slide on their bellies and use their flippers to turn right or left!"  AWESOME!

Exploring the Pressure Folds

The sea ice impacts this volcanic island (Ross Island) and begins to fold, bend, and create blue-green pools of water.  Right after I took this photo, a little seal stuck his head up through the water! It was so cute — but I missed the photo!  Oh well...

Just in the distance you can see New Zealand's Scott Base.

McLaren says that 20 percent of all 650S models and 95 percent of all P1s built this year feature some degree of MSO Bespoke content.

Smanie Saddles & The DINO24

Contact points can be a real sore point for cyclists. Comfortable hands, feet, and... undercarriage are critical to a great ride. As my ride lengths have increased, saddle comfort has decreased. I have been riding a WTB Rocket V Team for the last few years. The width is perfect for my sit bones and the flex smooths out the trail nicely. Every little bit of flex helps when you're riding rigid. Unfortunately, this added flex starts to wear on me when the miles increase. After competing with my wife, Mandi, in the John Bryan 6 Hour, I knew that I would need a new saddle before my solo six hour at the DINO24.

A few weeks before the DINO race, I had the opportunity to test out the Smanie MK Pro Racing. The name is a bit strange. The cover has more logos than a NASCAR race. However, the early rides proved to be very positive. The Smanie finds a great balance between padding and flex. The overall shape fits comfortably, and there is not so much flex as to create excess friction during those longer rides. I did not have time for a long ride, so it was risky to go with a new saddle. However, I knew the old WTB would create an additional area of discomfort. I would have enough areas of discomfort to deal with over the six hour race.

The Dino24 and the Smanie saddle were amazing. We had a great turn out by the COMBO Race Team, and we even filled out a few squads with some old friends. I witnessed a few tumbles on my first lap, but no one was seriously injured. I rode along with a number of different riders throughout the afternoon. It is nice to have a few moments to chat on the six hour races as opposed to the full blackout mode of the sprint races. When I needed a boost, I tossed back a pb&j rice cake. Mandi was kind enough to provide some goodies from the Skratch Labs Portables cookbook. The cheddar & bacon grits bites were phenomenal. These are the perfect race fuel for a kid that grew up in Georgia. Delicious and comfort are a nice addition to a long ride.

Although not delicious, the Smanie was very comfortable for the duration. It is easily the most comfortable saddle I have ridden on a mountain bike. However, Iam less impressed with the aesthetics. Luckily, it appears that Smanie has more discreet options. I just saw a new offering on the Smanie Saddles' Facebook page. I need to find one those for my stealthy Niner One9.

Now it's time to swap this thing onto my road bike. I might have a Fizik to eBay along with the old WTB.
