I'm part of a distributed engineering team, and although we make heavy use of chat, it's always nice to hop into live video from time to time. There are certainly cases where we just start a new Hangout, but we also have one that's just running all the time.

If you create a new multi-day event on Google Calendar, you can "Add video call" to that event. The hangout will last for the duration of the event, even if everyone drops out. Invitees can come and go as they please by clicking on the link in the event on their calendar.

It's not necessarily that difficult to set up a hangout on the fly, but it's definitely a bit quicker to say "anybody who's interested in this conversation can jump in the hangout".

Of course I just realized I messed up the screenshot of the example... ours is scheduled from 1/1/2014 to 1/1/2015. Sorry about that.

This is the age I coach in San Francisco. My two favorite lines from the article:

"[Mesquite Pee Wee Football Association President Ronnie Henderson] suggested Elijah play for his middle school team, but the boy doesn't have much football experience and was hoping to feel his way in peewee first."

...and...

"'No one is telling boys who are too thin or too small that they can't play football,' [Elijah's mother] said. 'Why tell my kid he's too big?'"

Really anxious to see how the picture quality of this 16MP 1/2.3in sensor compares to, say, the 8MP 1/3.2in sensor in the Samsung Galaxy S II / Epic 4G Touch. The 35mm equivalent 25-250mm zoom range is certainly an advantage over a state of the art smart phone, but by going with Android 2.3 and 3.5" screen it'll likely turn off Android purists. I hope they start coming at this from the other direction: grafting larger sensors and zooms onto full-featured smart phones. I really wouldn't mind a Galaxy Nexus style device at 3-4x the thickness if it were a "full featured" point-and-shoot.

Nikon's Coolpix S800c is an Android-powered point-and-shoot, launches next month for $349

Feels a bit like the D7000 replacement and good backup option for D800 owners. Might be time to sell off some gear and get ready to pre-order...

What makes me feel uncomfortable about the "Misunderstood" video isn't that the kid is recording video. He could do that and still participate. What gets me is that apparently rather than just capturing video to edit later, he has to constantly be fiddling with the phone and editing such that he can say "Hey, here's a video of that thing we just did" at the end of the day. The real value in having these sorts of things recorded is realized 6 weeks, or 6 months or 6 years after they happen, not 6 minutes.

As they roll it out you're asked if you'd like to authorize some default URL (in my case +KenSheppardson) or request something else. I don't recall the exact wording, but when you request an alternate you can say something like "this is the name I'm widely known by online". Since this is my twitter handle, username pretty much everwhere (e.g. FriendFeed), and I own kshep.net... boom.

Yep, all's well. Hope all's well with you too :-)

Just migrated http://kshepphoto.com from SmugMug over to Zenfolio. Not that there was anything really wrong with SmugMug--I've been a relatively happy user for years now--but Zenfolio just feels much cleaner to me.
