Is this a fire sale?

Microsoft marks down Windows to OEMs, kicks in free Office Home & Student 2013 to spur sales of smaller-sized tablets, 7-in. to 10.1-in. But analysts skeptical that either move will significantly boost sales. One worries that Microsoft and its OEMs are 'giddily' rushing to the pricing basement, where it can't compete against Android.

Office Home & Business 2013 pre-installed on Surface Pro tablets set to go on sale in Japan June 7 ... analysts see the move as heralding change in Microsoft's tablet strategy. More emphasis on Surface Pro as a business hybrid -- part tablet, part ultra-thin PC -- seems to be the path Microsoft will take with 10-in. devices powered by Windows 8. Which leaves the expected 8-in. Windows tablets for consumption, consumers.

I love the idea of manufacturers offering stock Android versions of their popular phones, but the more I think about this new "Google Edition" approach, the stranger it seems.

Hilarious!

Why you shouldn't ask for suggestions on Twitter if you're a terrorist group.

Al-Qadea asked for suggestions on Twitter about the "development of jihadist media" triggered a highly predictable avalanche of snark.

One helpful user tweeted a suggestion for "Al-Qaeda, the movie: Dude, where's my car bomb"

Another suggested: "More cats in online video releases."

Anyway, the Twitter trolling of Al Qaeda continues. Here's the hashtag, currently trending on Twitter: http://goo.gl/IQhKHP

A Windows 8.1 enigma wrapped in a mystery

Do developers and IT professionals who subscribe to MSDN and TechNet get Windows 8.1 before mid-Oct. Not even Microsoft knows. Conflicting statements from U.S. and Dutch spokeswomen create confusion, and company refuses to clarify.

Developers left in the lurch, says analyst, unless they get early access to important update.

Chrome gets an update!

Google Chrome bags a rare critical vulnerability fix today with update that patches 12 bugs. In 2012, critical flaws accounted for just under 5% of all reported and patched by Google. Today's update also earned researchers over $10K in bounties.

Next for Opera: Norwegian browser beta now uses WebKit rendering engine, sports revamped Speed Dial, adds support for Google's SPDY in low-bandwidth locales, and spins off baked-in email client to a separate application. No word on when Next will go final; spokeswoman says only 'later this year.'

More troubles for Windows 8...

Users tell Microsoft, keep your Windows 8 Metro apps, we don't want them http://bit.ly/ZdFWgk
Microsoft's new-style "Metro" Windows 8 apps were supposed to draw people to the operating system in droves, but the exact opposite is happening. Just-published research shows that 60% of users don't bother to launch even a single Metro app a day.
