So, a terrible thing happened to me today.
Went to boot up the laptop. Grub error, file not found.
Recovery disc, check sda5 (my root partition) empty... Odd
Try boot-repair to at least get windows up.
Boot into windows, mount sda5.
Everything is in lost +found folders, jumbled up, random labels.
Repair disk, fsck sda5. Says it's fine. Retrieve backup of master fs block (whatever it's called).
Writes a bunch of corrections.
Mount sda5, still see nothing. Properties shows 15 of 21 GB used (which would be correct).
Try boot-repair anyway. Boots to windows, because there ain't no linux on here.
At a loss, user data is in separate partition (maybe, everything's encrypted, see what's going on there when I have it running again), so I'm reinstalling Ubuntu right now.
So, I have a few questions. I haven't done any updates in about a week, so no recent changes. Worked just fine when I turned it off 12 hours ago.
1) what could cause this?
2) what more could I have done to recover my fs before nuking it?
