We are beyond excited, and most definitely very proud, to announce that one of our Grade 12 students - Devon Bourgeois - has won the prestigious national Loran Award from the Loran Scholars Foundation! Congratulations!!!

Devon is the third Loran scholar from KCS, following Christina Klassen (2011) and Hayden Rodenkirchen (2012). Read more about Devon and this amazing $100K scholarship at: http://loranscholar.ca/2016-loran-scholars/

Have you ever asked “What does it mean to be a Christian?” For some Christians there seems to exist a cloud of unanswered personal questions making the answers difficult, if not impossible to see. For example, what’s the difference between being a Christian accountant and a non-Christian accountant? If Jesus is Lord then each of our lives matter, including the work that we dedicate our lives to; so we know God has called us to engage it. To answer this simple but profound question we must consider the character of God, revealed through scripture, and how we can best reflect Him in the world we find ourselves in. We want our students to engage the world. It is hoped that students at Kelowna Christian School, through the diverse experiences provided for them, will wrestle with the answers as to how they can be Jesus within their personal circumstances.

Between January 22 to February 5 2016, KCS will be embarking on a trip with 14 Grade 11 and 12 students and 4 teachers to India to help at the Shanti Niketan Children’s Home. Started in 1988, the home’s mission is to raise up Christian leaders in Northern India; a region that has less than 1% of its population who call Jesus Lord. The home is currently in winter break from school and currently has 70+ children staying at the home with little to do. Our team will be running a Vacation Bible School at the home, giving the staff a much needed rest and the children a fun, engaging, and hopefully spiritually uplifting experience.

In addition, we will also spend some of our time exploring India and learning how the Indian Church and its international partners are responding to the needs of the country. We’ll be working alongside Child of Mine who are acting on behalf of the homes as a sponsorship organization, partnering with KCS, Willow Park Church, Westside Church, and MEI School with the Shanti Niketan and Dar Ul Fazl Homes in Northern India.

Each one of us is different, made up of different experiences and living in diverse contexts. God’s story invites us to be co-healers with Him within the context we find ourselves. We know that God’s story reveals His heart for the poor and marginalized, but what does that look like in our own lives? Please pray that our KCS students will not only see and learn while in India, but respond to this valuable question both when there and returning home.

Kelowna Christian School (KCS) High School Students (Gr. 10-12) are excited to participate in the habitat restoration work of Munson Pond Park (http://www.kelowna.ca/CM/Page4781.aspx), located in the backyard of the KCS Middle & High School Campus. Working with the Central Okanagan Land Trust, students planted several hundred native plants and assisted with removing noxious and invasive weeds in Munson Pond Park this week.

The beautiful pond (3.8 hectares) is surrounded by a mature remnant of cottonwood trees. This forest is valued for its bird watching opportunities, waterfowl habitat and habitat for small amphibians, reptiles and mammals.

Darren Lewis, Lead Principal at Kelowna Christian School, shares the excitement with the City of Kelowna for the restoration of this natural treasure. “Munson Pond Park represents a great opportunity for our students to be involved in caring for creation; not to mention, ecological sustainability in a tangible and meaningful way. We seek real world connections in our education”. The formation of Munson Pond Park will also allow KCS students unique access to the park space for future project-based learning projects.
