NEW! Unified Segments in Google Analytics

Today Google Analytics is getting an update to the Advanced Segmentation tool. This is one of the most popular features in Google Analytics. There are three big changes:

1. True User Segmentation. The big news is that advanced segments now support true user segmentation. This means that Google Analytics will actually segment people visiting a site or using an app. It also means we’ll be able to do things like cohort analysis.

2. Sequence Filters. Now that we have true user segments we can track the behavior of users across multiple sessions. For example, you can create a segment of all the people who visited from a campaign and then bought a product some time after seeing the campaign.

3. A refreshed interface.

Check out my post for a more in-depth look at the updates.

great! can't wait to use them! they're still not enabled in my dashboard.
Wow! Will this be only available in Universal Analytics or soon available in Google Analytics as well?
The segmentation update will be in Google Analytics. It's not specific to Universal Analytics. It's rolling out slowly, so you may not see it for a couple of weeks.
There's a teeny typo at the end: " really changes the way that people with use GA"... Should be "will use GA" I think?

But hey great post, I read all the way to the end!
Just so it is clear, does this replace the custom segments? If so, is there a succession plan for those using programmatic approaches to reporting? Invested a lot of time and energy building reports based on profile/ segment id's. Will these be kept?
Excellent post Justin ! Thanks for keeping us informed!
Hi Justin,

I have question about google analytics that has been bugging me for a while.

Our branded search has been going down in GA but direct traffic has been shooting through the roof. Google trends says our brand search is still high. This trend started in October 2012. Do you have any idea whats going on?

unfortunately I haven.t realize it. technically I'm poor in that analytics
Can I request to try it before it's rolled out to everyone? Can't wait!
