HRCP demands lifting of travel ban on journalist.

LAHORE - The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) has demanded that all curbs on journalist Cyril Almeida travelling abroad must be immediately withdrawn and any grievance that the authorities might have against him must be dealt with in accordance with the law, due process and universally acknowledged freedoms of opinion and expression.

Kazakhstan jails two journalists on tax fraud charges.

BRUSSELS - The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate, the Federation of Equal Journalists in Kazakhstan (FEJK), have condemned the imprisonment of two journalists, Seytkazy Matayev and his son Aset Matayev who were accused of tax fraud and embezzlement of state funds in Kazakhstan.

'Fake Sheikh' reporter guilty of perverting trial.

LONDON: British undercover journalist Mazher Mahmood, known for his “Fake Sheikh” disguise and string of celebrity tabloid stings, was found guilty Wednesday of perverting the course of justice.

Mahmood, who conceals his identity after a series of alleged death threats, is famous for his front-page scoops in which he poses as a wealthy figure from the Gulf and encourages celebrities into making embarrassing revelations.

Daily Times bats for Dawn.

ISLAMABAD – Daily Times Sunday came to the defense of Dawn which published a story this week that prompted a backlash.

In an editorial, Daily Times said: “It did not take long for Dawn to be termed as a ‘traitor’ for highlighting a story on issues that have already been covered numerous times by the international media.”

BOL launch before year-end.

ISLAMABAD – BOL News Television, brought down roughly by the authorities, is now dusting itself off and looking for a formal launch before the year ends.

SC dismisses FIA appeal seeking cancellation of Shoaib Shaikh bail.

KARACHI – The Supreme Court Monday dismissed an appeal by Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) seeking cancellation of bail granted to Shoaib Ahmed Shaikh, CEO of software company Axact.

The court upheld the decision of Sindh High Court that had granted bail to Shaikh and 13 others in a fake degree selling case.

IFJ demands arrest of Jang executive's abductors.

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joined its affiliate the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists (PFUJ) in condemning the abduction of Abid Abdullah, the executive director of Jang Group media house, on September 28 in Peshawar. He was released later the same day. The IFJ has demanded urgent action from the Pakistan government urging them to arrest his abductors and create a safe environment for media persons.
