Geeky post on compile time type checking... When it first arrived in java a few years ago, I didn't really see the big advantage.  I have seen the light:

Iterator<Entry<Integer, List<Integer>>> eit = aianFIPSTable.entrySet().iterator();

VMI has sacrificed some of their very best professors and it will have a long term negative impact on their ability to attract talented faculty.   All universities have, at times, encountered problems with abusive administrators, but the good ones (one for which I am fortunate to work) rectify the problem by replacing those who abuse their power, not by telling their faculty to shut up or get out. I truly hope that VMI is able to turn this around by reforming their performance evaluation and dispute resolution processes and giving control over these policy decisions to the faculty. Until that happens, I will have a hard time saying nice things about the workplace environment at VMI to job candidates who email me (which does happen from time to time).

Reuters article written by one of my former students about an EPI report on cost of living differences authored by one of my former UW grad school mates.  Way to go Paige and Elise!

Even North Dakota voted overwhelmingly to scrap the name "Fighting Sioux".  Given that the term "Redskin" is more offensive (on par with "Nigger" many argue), it is just bizarre that professional football in 2013 would resist dropping the name.  As many of you know, my level of respect for professional sports is already fairly low, but this doesn't help.  This legal petition is an interesting read of the struggle ...

The priest in this article is in trouble because he wrote that

"the priesthood as we currently have it in the church originated [not] with Jesus...It is more likely that some time after Jesus, a select and privileged group within the community who had abrogated power and authority to themselves, interpreted the occasion of the Last Supper in a manner that suited their own agenda.”

Obviously my atheism slants my views on such matters, but still, I find it hard to believe that such a statement should be controversial even among Catholics.  Of COURSE that's true - assuming there really was a Last Supper and a Jesus to be there for it. (But the poor priest doesn't seem to be questioning those notions.)  Otherwise almost everything we know about social science would be wrong.

The last couple times I've gone for a longer run, I popped Ibuprofen.  It definitely makes you feel more comfortable and stronger.  Guess I will have to think twice about making that a habit. Though I was only taking 200mg once before each run.  The subjects in the study  were taking 400mg twice - once the night before and again just before their workout.  Would be interesting to see follow up studies with lower dosages.
