There is much discussion online and also in small, private groups, about why the price of technology companies – public and private – are falling. Valuing any company can be difficult because it requires a degree of forecasting future growth and competition and ultimately the profits of the organization.

Hash Code is a team-based programming competition organized by Google for students and industry professionals across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. Participants compete in teams of two to four members. You pick your team and programming language, and solve a real-life engineering problem. The top 3 teams at the Final Round will win one Google­-related product per participant.

Now more than ever, powerful tech companies and entrepreneurs are freely sharing the code underlying their latest technologies. They recognize this will accelerate not only the progress of technology as a whole, but their own progress as well. It is altruism with self-interest, and it is how the tech world now works.

Predicting and preventing crime once only seemed possible in science fiction films. But now, Microsoft is developing a program that has the potential to mimic the powers of the 'precogs' from the 2002 film Minority Report and stop inmates from becoming recurring offenders. This new technology could predict which inmates will return to jail within six months of their release, based on historical data.

Some of the most prominent executives in the technology industry, including Tesla Motors Inc CEO Elon Musk, are backing a non-profit artificial intelligence research company with funding of $1 billion. OpenAI joins a number of other initiatives by prominent companies like Google, Apple and IBM to tap advanced computer technology to solve problems such as recognizing faces or translating languages.

A new method of delivering data, which uses the visible spectrum rather than radio waves, has been tested in a working office. Li-fi can deliver internet access 100 times faster than wi-fi, offering speeds of up to 1Gbps. It requires a light source, such as a LED bulb, an internet connection and a photo detector. Deepak Solanki, CEO of Velmenni, said the technology could reach consumers in three to four years.

All Imagine Cup competitors create projects that address the theme: "Imagine a world where technology helps solve the toughest problems". The Gartner CRM Guide, published in March predicts, for example, that by 2015, for the first time, more than 50 percent of customer-relationship management deployments will be deployed as SaaS, and that by 2025 that number will surpass 80 percent.
