IIT Madras: Going Global!

This is the concluding part of the series about why IIT Madras is a land of opportunities. Whether for placements or for higher studies, spending a semester abroad on an exchange programme is a good way to broaden one’s horizons – 70 students did that in the academic year 2014-15. Germany has always had a special relationship with IIT Madras, having offered their assistance when the institute was founded in 1959.
In the fourth and concluding part of this series, we look at IIT Madras' bid for global eminence.

IIT Madras: Where You Learn by Doing!

The student-run Centre for Innovation(CFI), comes alive at night, buzzing with activity as student teams work hard on different projects till the wee hours of the morning. Funded by the 1981 batch, CFI was envisioned as a forum for the creative output of engineers-in-the-making at IITM, along the lines of the Edgerton Center at M.I.T. The numerous clubs that make up CFI are a medium for the exchange of knowledge and ideas among students. Artiicle by ‪#‎T5E‬.

Joint Doctoral Program agreement signed between Curtin University, Australia and IIT Madras!

Indian Institute of Technology Madras broadened and strengthened its research links with Australia through a new partnership with the Curtin University, Perth. Prof. Brett Kirk, Associate Deputy Vice Chancellor - Research, Curtin University and Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras, signed an agreement on 14th May'2015 at the IIT Madras campus to formalize the joint-doctoral degree program.

Dean of International & Alumni Relations at IIT Madras, Prof R. Nagarajan said the Institute is pleased to be joining the venture. “IIT Madras has embarked on a systematic program of research collaboration with leading Universities around the world. We envision a four-stage process, starting with faculty interactions, leading to research scholar exchanges and joint supervision of Ph.D.s, culminating over time in joint doctorate programs. We are happy that with CurtinUniversity, we have reached the stage of signing a Joint Doctoral Program. It is gratifying that several faculty members at both institutions have already expressed interest in participating in this program. There has already been significant interaction among our faculty members across disciplines, in particular Chemical and Petroleum Engineering, as well as Civil”.

Curtin University is located in the state of Western Australia, the resource hub of Australia, and is recognised as the leading Engineering teaching, research and research training provider in the State. “Curtin University accepts with great enthusiasm the joint doctoral degree program development with IIT Madras”, said Professor Syed Islam, Dean International for the Faculty of Science and Engineering. He added “Curtin University already has a MoU and a student exchange agreement with IIT Madras in Ocean Engineering. In 2015, Curtin University will be sending a group of engineering students for a semester funded by the New Colombo Plan. The JDP agreement is aligned with Curtin’s vision for growth in international higher degree research students, joint publication with international authors, and mechanisms for strong interaction between IIT Madras and Curtin academic Scholars and Professors”.

IIT Madras Team wins Multiple Sclerosis Segmentation Challenge in New York!

IITM team consisting of Suthirth Vaidya (ED10B059) and Abhijit Chunduru (ED10B047), final year DD students of the Department of Engineering Design, has won the First Place at the Longitudinal Multiple Sclerosis Segmentation Challenge at ISBI 2015 held at New York. Out of 34 teams from 27 universities/institutions across 15 countries that entered the Challenge, a total of 12 teams (including Harvard, University College London, McGill, University of Lubeck) participated in the final round and the IITM entry was declared the best performing algorithm among all teams. The team was guided by Dr. Ganapathy Krishnamurthi and Dr. M. Ramanathan. The team’s participation in New York was supported by Alumni through their Travel Grant Programme.

An Abstract about the Challenge:
In the Longitudinal MS Lesion Segmentation Challenge, competing teams apply their automatic lesion segmentation algorithms to MR neuroimaging data acquired at multiple time points from MS patients. Algorithms would be evaluated against manual segmentations from multiple raters in terms of their segmentation accuracy and ability to track lesion evolution. This challenge comes seven years following the successful MICCAI 2008 lesion segmentation challenge. The image segmentation field has continued to develop new approaches in this time, and the added longitudinal dimension in the data will provide a new element for the competitors to consider in their algorithm development. Furthermore, the training and test data, which will be made publicly accessible, would provide a valuable new resource to the entire biomedical imaging community for determining the efficacy of longitudinal lesion segmentation algorithms in natural history studies and clinical trials.
The Longitudinal MS Lesion Segmentation Challenge will be conducted at the 2015 International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging in New York, NY, April 16-19. Competing teams will apply their automatic lesion segmentation algorithms to MR neuroimaging data acquired at multiple time points from MS ...
