What mistakes or traps should young designers try to avoid when creating an illustration? “They should embrace and understand feedback. Constructive feedback from both peers and authoritative figures can provide an incredibly valuable asset for growth and innovation. The important part is to take a step back after hearing feedback and decide how it should affect your work moving forward. That said, don’t resist challenges to try new techniques, formats or technologies. Believe it or not, every piece of feedback (positive or negative) can be valuable. It is how you decide to ingest the feedback that can make a positive impact for your future growth and discoveries.”

What mistakes or traps should young designers try to avoid when creating an illustration? “Start soft — I try to start with an HB pencil — and work deeper, committing to pen when I’m happy. Be comfortable with your technology and terminology; ask questions if you are unsure. Documentation is very important, and an obvious weakness of mine. Some of my favourite illustrations have been done in random places globally, then given away before scanning or photographing properly.”

IdN v25n1: Illustration Special — Deciphering the Language of Illustration
The flexibility of illustration as a design genre is both a boon and a handicap. For the artist, it opens up an almost infinite field of opportunities, yet it is also restrictive in that once he or she has been identified with a particular sub-set of illustration — fashion, say, or infographics — the harder it becomes to establish an individual personality within that subject-specific straitjacket.

“Typography is a way of demonstrating emotions. The nature of the lines, the direction of the strokes, the composition — all these things help recreate the specific mood of a work and through this mood, the author can translate his emotional state, thoughts and other ideas to the viewer. In my daily life, I’m pretty calm because by creating letters, I can stay away from anger and negative thoughts.”

What is the most memorable piece of typography you have come across? “Wipeout 3 changed my life forever. The packaging, the intro movie, the game. Prior to this I was interested only in graffiti, but when The Designers’ Republic came out with the ‘believable future’ in such high quality, I knew right away I wanted to do such things too. They have been one of my most important inspirational sources since then.”
