Our 2014 annual collector’s ornament has arrived! This year’s ornament, the 22nd in the series, represents the theme “Building Seaside Memories” and depicts The Del as a sandcastle with the warm colors of a Coronado sunset. It is sculpted in molded glass and comes in a beautiful padded gift box. Get yours in The Signature Shop or Est. 1888 store, or online. http://ow.ly/DfmwA

As seen in Condé Nast Traveler! "Some Like It Hot—widely considered one of the greatest comedies of all time—made great use of San Diego’s luxurious Hotel del Coronado, the outside of which can be spotted throughout the movie. ..."

My family of 4 stayed for 5 nights in two adjacent rooms. We loved being in this iconic hotel, with its layout and design from another era but extremely enjoyable today. Our rooms were on the 4th floor looking west across the courtyard, so we got evening sun on the balcony and the room was private and quiet. The restaurants were expensive but very good; a few nights we walked down Orange Ave. to eat. I liked the shopping possibilities at the hotel, and the beach was clean and fun. One day we biked around the island, one day we rented a car at the hotel to drive up to La Jolla, and the other days we taxied to various sights. But the kids wanted a lot of beach and pool time. This hotel was so much more satisfying than the usual bland, sterile nowheresville chain hotel. This is a destination hotel: we loved it!

I'm so very sorry to write this review. I am a well-seasoned Canadian traveler and very much was looking forward to my stay here. Positives: the hotel grounds are impressive, well-manicured and beautiful Con: oh my, where to start. First off: the hotel is located near a naval base (sorry if this is incorrect I am not 100% familiar with the particulars of the US army) and helicopters fly over every 10-15 minutes causing a very loud noise. Obviously this is NOT the hotels fault, but something to be aware of. Second: our check-in time was between 2pm and 4pm and sadly our room wasn't ready until 4pm despite the fact that we had called earlier to say we would be arriving around noon. I realize as well, this may be the fault of the previous guests, but noted regardless. Our room was on the "first floor" and about 10 ft away from the main walkway in the area. People would stare at us on our deck and we would wave back. If you are comfortable with this, it is not necessarily a con. We are shy Canadians so this was quite awkward and really took away from the gorgeous view. Our room didn't have a corkscrew, strange for a 5-star hotel, nor wine glasses, or kettle. Also our room was directly located underneath the main restaurant and the children were playing, well, 3 ft from our room. Again, not the hotels fault but really took away from the experience. We dined at the patio grill of the hotel and paid $60.00 for a sandwich, a salad and a margarita which is almost a crime considering the margarita came in a plastic cup. We should have done our research beforehand, but I'm sorry, I really don't care how fancy a restaurant is, this is simply poor value. To continue, the entire hotel is a maze and has very poor signage which means you may wander around a little bit. If this doesn't bother you, again its not a con, but something to note. We were extremely frustrated trying to find our room, but made it eventually. The town is beautiful, but I have to give this a very poor star rating because for $600.00 a night CAD, I expect WAY more. At home in a Fairmont resort we would have an incredible room, large bathroom, gorgeous view, complimentary food and beverages as well as early check-in, comp upgrades etc. We have stayed at many many hotels internationally, in Mexico and US, as well as abroad and sadly felt this one did not provide value or good experience for the price. I would not recommend this hotel and am glad we are only staying 1 night.

Just walked through it as I saw it off the beach. Beautiful grounds, beautiful hotel, well kept. Didn't stay, so can't comment on that. There are lots of helicopters and planes flying by quite frequently.

All in all, I am extremely disappointed with the Hotel del Coronado. My boyfriend and I stayed at the hotel for a wedding - but decided in advance that if we enjoyed ourselves, we were going to come back for the week Christmas. I was really excited about the potential of coming back because I have heard that the ambiance that the hotel creates for the holidays is outstanding. Unfortunately, we had an awful experience and will likely never return. We're going to stick with our traditional Holiday resort - Terranea. A few of the things that impacted our experience: -Upon checking in, the room key did not work. We had to haul across the grounds back to the front desk (minor, I know - but it is really not a good way to set the stage for your stay). -The light fixtures in the bathroom were rusty and there was some type of brown residue splattered on the wallpaper. -The shower head didn't work, so I forcefully opted for a bath but there was no plug for the drain (I used a towel to plug it. Classy, I know). -We accidentally locked our key in the room late at night (stupid mistake). My boyfriend had to go to the front desk THREE times before they finally gave us a key that worked. -The neighbors were engaging in some type of drunken domestic dispute in the middle of the night (I felt like we were at a college party at a Holiday Inn). I called the front desk and it rang for 3 minutes before I finally gave up. Made for a sleepless night.

I stopped in the Hotel Del Coronado, outside San Diego proper a while ago and its historic look and feel instantly made it one of my favorite hotels. I loved the old decor, old school layout of the shops below first level and the old oiled dark deep wood walls. The staff was generally helpful and the I have to say the beach was wide and huge with beautiful white sand and my experience overall was absolutely lovely.

Beautiful walk along the beach and very interesting hotel design. Sunset bar is the perfect place to sit in the evening. Would love to do the smores on the beach but so overpriced!

The hotel is simply stunning. I love the vintage vibe that you get when you walk through the doors of the Hotel Del. One my favorite things to do is to come and sit at the bar and listen to the great live music. Full of history and glamour, the Hotel Del is a San Diego staple. Parking can be expensive, but if you arrive early enough you might get lucky and nab a spot on the street.

So much fun to be had staying at this historic hotel! The beach, the island and navy soldiers running the beach! They will not tell you what one is the haunted room. But I am not sure that I want to know.
