Another post - twice in one year! I must be on a roll!

I've been adding updating courses these last few months. Excel and Word courses are now updated to 2013 versions. Both the NET courses (VB and C#) are now up-to-date. Lots of my time has actually been spent on somebody else's site (my brother's). Seriously, never tell your friends and relatives you can programme!

Lots of request for ASP NET. To be honest, I don't have a great deal of love for ASP. I am playing around with it, though. I have Microsoft's Web Matrix here and do like how easy Master Pages make updating your site. One of these days I may even get around to actually writing a course.

I'm also playing around with Excel VBA, and am writing some beginners stuff.

The big news is that I've scraped the Home and Learn exam site. (That's the smaller homeandlearn.org site and definitely NOT the main homeandlearn.co.uk one.) It wasn't getting that many visitors, but was taking up a lot of time. There was no money in it so I decided to wield the axe. Many apologies to those of you were actually enjoying taking the course questions. Hopefully, I can integrate the questions into the main site. I've made a start on this - in ASP NET!

Sorry I haven't posted for a while - I get really lazy with social networking sites!

Currently working on updating the VB NET and C# NET courses for the Visual Studio Express 2012 versions. They won't be on the site for a month or so, though. The next full course will, hopefully, be one with Windows 8 phones and tablets in mind. So you'll be able to write your own apps for the Windows store. I thought about doing a course for iPhones/iPads, but to be honest Objective-C is not a language I know well. I know you can write apps for Android/iPhone using Javascript/HTML5/CSS with the excellent Titanium, and that would be my preferred way of doing things, so maybe next year!

Just want to reply to those who don't like the fact the some of the code is actually images on the site, so you can't copy and paste. I appreciated how frustrating this can be but, honestly, you'll learn more typing it all out for yourself. You can copy and paste from the eBook versions of the course, however. Even so, I still recommend typing it all out for yourself.

Thanks to everyone who has left a comment, and for all your support of the site - really appreciated it!

Kenny

Just added a new Javascript course to the site! There's 58 pages of lessons aimed at beginners to the subject. You do need to know a little HTML, but not much. If you're interested in HTML5 there are 15 pages of tutorials on the Canvas tag, plus 2 on Geolocation. There are also sections on Forms and Javascript, image manipulation, rollovers, and tons more!

Hi, I really enjoyed your Free Java Course, however I'm having a bit of a problem on the Calculator course.
Free Java Course
Page 10
Subtract, Divide and Multiply Buttons for our Java Calculator
The switch statement has a case for each of the math operators: +, -, /, and *. We haven't added any code, yet. But have a look at the code you already have for you equals button:

total2 = total1 + Double.parseDouble( txtDisplay.getText( ) ) ;
txtDisplay.setText( Double.toString(total2) );
total1 = 0;

The last two lines are OK, and don't need to be changed. The first line, however, can be used in the switch statement. This line, remember, is the one that adds up.
It can be moved up and used as the code for the + case:

What does "It can be moved up" mean & how do you do that?

I would really appreciate a prompt reply, thanks.

Finally finished the new Web Design course, and it's up on the site. Like all the Home and Learn course, it's free! I wrote it so that you won't need to buy any software - you'll already have everything you need. You can use any operating system, as well. The course covers HTML, HTML5, and CSS. There are over 60 pages of lessons, so it'll probably take you some time to finish! http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/WD/WebDesign.html

Dear Sir,

With no prior programming experience, I've just completed the "Java for beginners" course and did all 10 exercises without any difficulty. Thanks indeed for the course, I have found it very useful, easy-to-follow and fun. Could you give advice on how to proceed with my Java? I would like to reach professional/advanced level as quickly as possible.

Greetings from Hungary,
Gabor

Good news if you're in India - I've lowered the price for the VB NET book. It was £5.49, which is about 475 INR. The new price for Indian students is £1.49, or about 130 INR. Hope this helps! (I'll do a similar deal for the C# NET book, if this works out.) The page is here on the site: http://www.homeandlearn.co.uk/bookshop/net_india.html

I'd be interested to hear from those in other countries where you feel the price of the VB NET PDF is too high. Maybe I can do a similar deal!

Sorry I haven't posted for a while. Just been writing a new Javascript course. Almost done. Lots of stuff for HTML5, especially the canvas tag. There's even a section on how to get to get touch-enabled devices (iPad/iPhone, etc) to work with the canvas.
