Japanese Yew Bonsai Tree | Herons Bonsai
herons.co.uk

Bonsai are now a part of our lives. Like oriental food, they are now taken for granted and most people are familiar with them. No longer are these tiny trees regarded as curiosities or botanical freaks, as they were a few decades ago. There was a time when they were available only at specialist centres, but now it is possible to buy bonsai in shopping malls and on the internet. These plants can also be found at garden centres and horticultural shows.

Some Bonsai are relatively inexpensive, while others can be very costly. As with any commodity, the different styles and grades of bonsai are reflected in the price. You can buy a young, newly trained bonsai with very limited funds, or you can spend thousands on an exquisite masterpiece that has been shown at major exhibitions in Japan. Serious Bonsai enthusiasts regard good-quality bonsai as works of art, and these are highly collectable plants.

Although the art of Bonsai is essentially about growing trees, for many people it is much more than that. Bonsai plants convey something about the owners lifestyle, aesthetic sense and attitude towards nature and the environment. Growing bonsai has come to be associated with Zen aesthetics, and some practitioners derive a special therapeutic benefit, which comes from the innate peace and tranquility that working with bonsai imparts. Like yoga and t’ai chi, bonsai are said to have a calming influence on the mind and spirit, and they can help to relieve the stresses of today’s busy world.

Bonsai are certainly beautiful to look at,but there is much more to the pastime than simply achieving beauty. The image of an ancient tree clinging to a rock and struggling to survive against all the odds has been a source of inspiration for Chinese sages and scholars for at least two millennia.

Keeping bonsai is not just about gardening - it is art and spirituality combined with horticultural techniques. Creating bonsai is a challenge, and enthusiasts are forever striving for horticultural and aesthetic excellence. Unlike other artistic projects, however, a bonsai is never finished. It continues to grow and change, which means that perfection is always transitory and beauty is only momentary. Growing bonsai is a never-ending quest for perfection.

Those who are dedicated to the hobby regard it as a way of life. It requires commitment and can dictate the way you spend your time and resources. Your weekends and holidays can soon become geared around your bonsai activities. Nevertheless, the rewards that come from striving for a perfect work of art more than compensate for the time and effort involved.

We are Britain’s Premier Bonsai Nursery, with over 7 acres of land dedicated to bonsai, and have 21 RHS Chelsea Flower Show Gold Medals, and have a display at Wisley Gardens dedicated to our bonsai. We sell our bonsai through our website Herons Bonsai

Twisted Trunk | Itiogawa Bonsai
http://www.herons.co.uk/

The trunk of a Bonsai deserves specific attention, as it is one of the most eye-catching features of a tree. The following features will be discussed: The Nebari, tapering, thickness and overall shape of the trunk.

The Nebari (root-flare) is important in providing a Bonsai with a well-balanced appearance. More information can be found at the root-flare page.

A trunk should be thicker at its base than at the top of the tree; this is called tapering. Although it is hard to improve irregularities in the thickness of a trunk (select trees well before buying them) it is possible to achieve minor changes:
Thickening part of the Bonsai trunk

By allocating the tree’s growth to the branches just above the thin part of the trunk this part will benefit from an increase in the flow of nutrients and as a result grow thicker. Allocating growth can be done by pruning the entire tree except for the branches above the thin part on the trunk. This method is slow and it will take at least two years before you will start noticing any changes. As said before; selecting trees on its tapering trunk is important.

As it is impossible to make a trunk thinner, the only way to make the trunk tapering is to thicken the other parts of the trunk, using the method described above. However, it will take even longer before you can notice significant change. You might conceal the thick point by creating a Jin or Shari instead.

Bonsai plants often look older than they are when they have a thick and gnarly trunk. The only way for a trunk to grow thicker is to let the tree grow freely in a large container, without pruning it for several years. Once you are satisfied with the thickness of the trunk you can train it again and place it in a smaller pot.

The overall shape of a trunk is one of the most eye-catching aspects of a tree As it is nearly impossible to bend a trunk once it reaches a certain thickness (until that point you can use a trunk-bender) it is important to take the shape of the trunk into account when buying it.

Most of our Evergreen bonsai such as the White Pines and Junipers are imported from Japan, but we also produce quite a few varieties here on our nursery. They are mainly the conifers such as pines, junipers, cypress, cryptomerias, yews and cedars. They stay green all year round and in Oriental folklore, they symbolise longevity and prosperity. They are elegant and serene to look at, and one of the main reasons why people derive peace and calm when they view bonsai.

The Juniper in the picture above is one of our specimens displayed at a Chelsea Flower show.

The Five needle pines shown here are one of our popular lines. We do not show our Specimen and High Quality trees on the inter net shop as they are too large and heavy to ship. But if you would like to see some of our special or more expensive 'specimen' trees - just give us a ring and we will e-mail you a picture. If you could visit the nursery - that is even better.

Junipers are perfectly hardy in temperate areas. In areas where temperatures fall below - io°C (14°F), move it to a frost-free shed or greenhouse in winter. It does best if it is placed in full sun throughout the growing season. During the winter, junipers take on a brown or reddish hue when exposed to frost.

Herons Bonsai.

The Chinese Juniper is an evergreen shrub or small tree and is one of the most popular species for bonsai. It looks lovely and is easy to keep, and can survive well in most climates.
It has dark  to mid-green cord like foliage and bears spherical fruits, which ripen to black. Chinese Junipers   eventually develop gnarled, twisted trunks, which makes them ideal for bonsai with driftwood effects They are excellent subjects for bonsai shaped in the contemporary sculptural style.
