HOW TO READ A NUTRITION LABEL - Volume 9 of 9: Minerals and Vitamins
Both vitamins and minerals are essential for the body to perform at its best as they are responsible for tons of bodily activities including immune health, converting food into energy, healing injuries, tissue repair, etc. Despite both being micronutrients, meaning the body only needs small amounts, they play a big role in preventing disease and when not present, can cause BIG problems.
Vitamins can be broken down by heat, acid, and air so they can be more difficult to get from foods due to storage, preparation, and packaging of foods.
Minerals cannot be de-natured or broken down in terms of structure and are transferred from the soil and water into the foods that we eat. However, supplementing becomes important because our soil is not as rich as it once was and our water supplies have changed as well.
There are at least 30 vitamins and minerals that are essential but that your body cannot make on its own, hence the need for supplementation in combination with proper diet. The idea of achieving a balanced diet is not possible with foods alone, especially for endurance athletes who deplete the body of vitamins and minerals at a faster rate than the average being.

Hammer Nutrition Sponsored Athlete Howie Nordström modified a Food Matters Recipe for a yummy #foodiefriday & #howihammer chocolate treat.
Enjoy!
Walnut-Cocoa-Chia Mouse
• 1.5 cups homemade rice or almond milk
• 1/4 cup walnuts
• 1/4 avocado
• 2 Tbsp chia seeds
• 1-2 Tbsp raw cacao powder (more cacao = more intense chocolate taste)
• 1 Tbsp raw cacao nibs
• 1/2-1 Tbsp maple syrup (I like mine less sweet)
• 1 heaping tsp maca powder
• 1/4 tsp cinnamon
• pinch of vanilla powder (or essence)
• 1 scoop Hammer Nutrition Vegan protein powder (chocolate OR vanilla: if vanilla, go heavier on the cacao powder)
Topping:
• a few walnuts
• 1 heaping tsp raw cacao nibs
1. Blend all but the topping ingredients until really smooth.
2. Pour into desired bowl or glass(es).
3. Top with cacao nibs and walnuts.
4. Allow to cool in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the chia seeds to soften (making them easier to digest), and to set up a bit more.

Protein: Questions, concerns, & answers
In addition to the usual information we offer concerning all of our fuels and supplements, the issue of protein intake also requires dealing with some misperceptions. Endurance athletes have certain oft-spoken beliefs about protein intake; here we take a look at three most commonly voiced.
"I thought only bodybuilders needed high protein diets."
-When you get down to it we are bodybuilders in some respects, building our bodies to do what we want them to. The truth is that endurance athletes and bodybuilders have similar protein requirements, but the way in which the body uses the protein differs. Bodybuilders need protein primarily to increase muscle tissue; endurance athletes need protein primarily to repair existing muscle tissue that is undergoing constant breakdown from day-to-day training.
"Eating a high-protein diet will cause unwanted weight gain and muscle growth."
-Actually, the type of training you engage in determines whether you bulk up or not. High volume endurance training does not product muscle bulk, regardless of protein intake, whereas relatively low volumes of strength training will. Either way, the muscle tissue requires protein. Additionally, it is the volume of calories you consume--be it from carbohydrates, protein, or fat--that is the primary factor in weight gain. You've simply got to have more calories going out (i.e. "being burned") during exercise and other activities than you have coming in via the diet to avoid unwanted weight gain.
"But I thought carbohydrates were the most important fuel for exercise."
-While carbohydrates are indeed the body's preferred source of fuel, protein plays an important part in the energy and muscle preservation needs of endurance athletes. Protein is mainly known for its role in the repair, maintenance, and growth of body tissues, but it also has a role in energy supply. After about 90 minutes of exercise in well-training athletes, muscle glycogen stores become nearly depleted, and the body will look for alternative fuel sources. Your own muscle tissue becomes a target for a process called gluconeogenesis, which is the systhesis of glucose from the fatty and amino acids of lean muscle tissue. The degree of soreness and stiffness after a long, intense workout is a good indicator of just how much muscle cannibalization you have incurred. Adding protein to your fuel mix provides amino acids and thus reduces tissue cannibalization.

HOW TO READ A NUTRITION LABEL - Volume 8 of 9: Protein
Most athletes know that including protein in their diets is essential for performance, but it has several other benefits. Protein aids in the building and repairing of muscle tissues, is important in building bones, and can also boost your immune system. During prolonged exercise, the body uses protein as a fuel source after it’s depleted the body of stored glycogen. This is why it becomes important to consume a fuel source with protein.
“The more prolonged or intense the exercise, the more protein the body cannibalizes for energy from the working muscles.” - Dr. Bill Misner
Athletes also need to include protein in their recovery immediately following exercise as studies have shown a greater benefit for muscle growth than any other time.

I've been using Hammer products for years now after being introduced to them at my first triathlon in Virginia in 2008. Hammer's focus on nutrition has made a tremendous difference in my training as it allows me to fuel correctly to complete the workouts I need as well as recovering effectively to go on to the next session. Their gels are great for the middle of a workout and the protein powders go great in smoothies. I have been seriously impressed with Recoverite and the whey protein recovery bars, I can definitely tell a difference when I use them after a hard workout in how I feel the next day. Would certainly recommend to anybody looking for quality nutrition in their training.

I have been a satisfied Hammer Nutrition customer for almost 2 years. I love how all my supplemental and nutritional needs can be met with one product line. Since I have been using their products I have seen an improvement in my performance and my recovery. The customer service that they provide cannot be beat! The customer service representatives are friendly and knowledgable. Hammer's website is easy to navigate and each product comes with a thorough explanation of how and when to use. There isn't any guessing. I also appreciate how Hammer is active in the endurance sports community. I have done several races in which Hammer was a sponsor. Hammer Nutrition is a top-notch company in my book.

I'm a 40+ female endurance runner who has been using Hammer products for almost two years now. I have tried many different products in the past, but I struggled to find a product that "settled" well in my stomach after taking it (keep in mind that I have an overly sensitive stomach). When a friend recommended that I try Hammer products (which are carefully formulated and contain no refined sugars or artificial ingredients), I immediately noticed a difference. I did not experience intestinal distress like I did with other products, and additionally, I was surprised to also note that my performances began to improve. I highly recommend HammerNutrition to any athlete who is looking for superior products that deliver on their claims!!!

Hammer knows that athletes come in different shapes and different sizes, which is why their products aren't a "one-size-fits-all" deal. You customize the fuel to suit your needs and to suit your body! I also like to know what the ingredients are in my fuel and like that Hammer doesn't add extra sugar like many other competitors! Whether you're a short distance or a long-distance runner, Hammer has the proper fuel and supplements YOU need to help you stay on top of your game and to enjoy it! -The Running Teacher

Mito Caps almost caused me a heart attack! Yikes, better steer clear of Hammer Nutritions claims on performance supplements that don't explain the side effects.

If it was not for Hammer Nutrition products I am not sure I would still be running. They not only have an excellent line of products, but they educate you on how and when to best use them to improve your performance. I use the Recoverite, Hammer Gels and Recovery Bars with every run. As a result I continue to improve and go greater distances with little downtime. Coming across Hammer Nutrition has been game and life changing.

I started running in 2007 and knew nothing about nutrition. After a few years of trial and error (and a few REALLY bad experiences) I stumbled upon Hammer Nutrition and have been feeling great and setting personal records since. After finding Hammer Nutrition and learning how to fuel properly with natural products, I went from swearing I'd never do another marathon to being a 2-time Ironman, ultra-marathoner and have qualified to run in the Boston Marathon. I use their products daily and know they are a vital part of my endurance sport success!
