American artist Ellsworth Kelly was born on this day in 1923. In his work Kelly abstracts the forms in his paintings from observations of the real world, such as shadows cast by trees or the spaces between architectural elements. In 1996 the Guggenheim hosted his career retrospective, which filled our rotunda with color. Learn more: http://gu.gg/4RvK300L6zp

Final weekend! Escape the heat with four screenings of Mohsen Makhmalbaf’s “Salam Cinema” (1994), concluding our month-long #GuggUBSMAP film series curated by Bidoun. “A raw antagonization of truth and power,” this non-narrative documentary chronicles an audition process that reveals the power of cinema and the problematic nature of authorship: http://gu.gg/52Od300EFI8

Swiss artist Jean Tinguely was born on this day in 1925, known for his kinetic artworks. Tinguely said, “[I] began to use movement simply to make a re-creation. It was a way of redoing a painting so that it would become infinite—it would go on making new compositions with the help of the physical and mechanical movements I gave it.” From our collection, enjoy "White Moving Forms on Black Background (TNT)," (1957): http://gu.gg/gCqb300rOBb

Artist Franz Kline was born on this day in 1910. Kline became known as an Action painter because his work expressed movement and energy, emphasizing dynamic line. The characteristic black slashes of "Painting No. 7" (1952) suggest the full body movement of the artist as he spontaneously applied the paint, incorporating chance splatters and smearing. In fact, Kline’s paintings were constructed only to look as if they were painted in a moment of inspiration—they usually resulted from the transfer of a sketch to the canvas. French painter Henri Rousseau was born on this day in 1844. Known for his unusual depiction of modern times, Rousseau became something of a sensation within the relatively small Parisian art scene. His astonishing works were celebrated by Guillaume Apollinaire, Alfred Jarry, and Pablo Picasso, and he came to be considered a major force by artists such as Max Beckmann, Vasily Kandinsky, and Fernand Léger only a few years after his death. From our collection, enjoy “The Football Players” (1908): http://gu.gg/Ueeo300quxE
