Lonely Planet eBooks: because showing up in Antarctica and winging it usually doesn’t work out.
Why not to buy a vacation from Groupon: Hotels in description were not anything like the hotel we ended up at. The hotel Groupon sent us to didn't even have soap or shampoo. We were promised all transportation would be on an air conditioned motor coach and instead we were offered multiple 5+ hour bus rides on local buses without a/c that were over sold. We were asked to ride on top of one of these buses for a 7 hour bus ride. The travel company that Groupon obviously didn't research, took days if not weeks to respond to any communications. While on the trip the people Groupon had set up for us to talk to were not helpful and even yelled at us when we finally got in touch with them. We paid for extra excursions on the trip over 7 months ahead of time and they weren't booked until the week of our trip so we were asked to separate for a $700 excursion and do it on different days without one another (my husband and I). We ended up purchasing 2 flights while we were already on the trip so we wouldn't have to ride another local bus. When we got back and let Groupon know everything that happened that acted appalled and said at minimum they expected to give us a partial refund. After almost a month we were offered a $50 voucher (not even from or for Groupon) to travel with the same travel company that had done such a poor job and Groupon referred to this as a refund in a later email. When you are half way around the world feeling unsafe and vulnerable Groupon will not have your back. They won't even make things right when you are back in the country and they are fully aware of what they have done. This is a company that truley does not care about your well being and will put you in high risk situations after you spend thousands of dollars with them.
