Fear… we all feel it. A sudden startle in response to a perceived threat, a shortness of breath and chest constriction as your heart quickens pace. An unshakeable feeling of dread, then excessive worrying triggered by an unstoppable train of thoughts. Or occasionally, even a full-blown panic attack.

Fear is the biology of survival. It’s the primitive brain’s internal alarm system - alerting us to danger and triggering a ‘fight, flight, or freeze’ response. While your amygdala sounds the alarm in your brain, a cascade of stress hormones like cortisol, adrenalin and noradrenalin are released into the body. This causes massive changes to your metabolic rate – as your heart-rate, breathing and blood sugar levels go up, priming you for action.

https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellor-articles/neutralise-panic-anxiety-and-depression

Neutralise panic, anxiety and depression with grounding techniques: Practising regular grounding exercises can help you feel more secure, stable and connected to yourself, especially after a period of anxiety or dissociation. These exercises can also be used to overcome panic attacks and feelings of detachment in depression. They include learning to keep your feet anchored to the floor, finding your centre of gravity, adopting an upright posture and standing still with your legs apart. As well as practising how to move with a fluid, steady motion to maintain balance and equilibrium, this helps you remain present in the here-and-now, rather than retreating to your head and overthinking things in a crisis, or worrying and becoming detached from your feelings. Practising grounding daily ensures you regain a sense of focus and stability. It can restore your self-confidence as you learn to trust your instincts and sensory experience – reconnecting the mind and body. You are also less likely to drift off into dissociative states or detachment.

Changing anxious habits or behaviours can be very challenging. While many of us would prefer to seek instant solutions to break old habits, this can often lead to frustration and disappointment. For one reason or another most of us have felt trapped in a pattern of anxious thinking and behaving that disrupts our progress. We may feel caught by our own impulses and defensive reactions to situations, or imprisoned by anxious thoughts and preoccupations. #Psychology #Psychotherapy #Counselling #BACP #UKCP #MIND #Philosophy #Mindfulness #Neuroscience #Anxiety #Depression #PanicAttacks #Twickenham #Whitton #London #Hounslow #Teddington #Kingston

https://www.counselling-directory.org.uk/counsellor-articles/wired-up-for-anxiety

We are all wired for anxiety as part of a primitive survival mechanism inherited from our evolutionary past. The fear response is deeply embedded in our neural networks, alerting the body and brain to danger. The animal in us is alive and kicking.

Anxiety triggers our “fight, flight and freeze response” when we feel threatened, firing off a cascade of neurochemical transmitters in our nervous system whenever we detect danger or get into conflict. Even low-level threats such as meeting deadlines, problem-solving, making decisions or completing a difficult task can cause an accumulation of stress that leads to anxiety. Stress hormones flood the body: priming us for immediate action - arousing fear, tension and keeping us on high alert.
