Heating a home can be expensive, especially in places like Sweden, where it's cold for long stretches of the year. And with our reliance on coal and oil for energy, staying warm is very rarely a green or environmentally friendly decision. That's why one family in Stockholm came up with a completely brilliant plan to save on their heating bills while eliminating the need for traditional fuel. Not only was their solution resourceful, but it was actually quite brilliant.

This hydroponic bottle is the easiest hydroponic garden in this book and a great first step into hydroponics. I love building this system with kids from ages 8 to 18 when I do school visits. There are so many ways to customize the bottle with different paints and decorations, so it's easy to make this garden your own.

To simplify the assembly of this system, you may wish to find a bottle with an opaque exterior to skip the painting process.

Anyone who prides themselves on practicing a green lifestyle knows that sometimes creativity is necessary to make up for a lack of sustainable products on the market. Fortunately, home building suppliers have begun developing products that meet sustainable living goals.

When it comes to construction options, consumers are no longer limited to a measly selection of eco-friendly products, as in years past.

Choosing the right plants for your green roof is essential. There are plants that need more sunlight and some that need less. Some are more resistant to extreme weather conditions, while some are more fragile and need to be grown under specific conditions. Some plants need lots of watering, while some can get by with weekly or monthly watering, and for some, even just the water they get from rain is enough.

The NEA Foundation and AT&T have partnered with Project EATS, a program of the Active Citizens Project in New York City, which builds farms near school grounds enabling students and the community they live in to work with experienced farmers to grow, package and market their products as they acquire knowledge and skills.

Working with the people at Project EATS, it's like we're a big family.

People in general were kinda like, you know, you'd tell 'em what we were doing and they'd be like, "You're gonna do what?" Like they thought, I think, that we were just gonna live in a container as it comes. Like, well, are you gonna have a toilet? Yeah, I'm gonna have a toilet, you know...

You don't need to be a gadget lover or technology geek to understand the significance of cells. Many gadgets and devices that we use in our everyday life still run on batteries. This can be highly frustrating if you rely on disposable batteries—it can seem like you're stuck in an ongoing circle of low batteries and replacement expenses.

But what if there was a way to get out of that loop? Fortunately, there is: using rechargeable batteries.

The sooner you wrap your brain around the idea that a few weeds or weed patches in the lawn is normal, the happier you’ll be with your organic lawn maintenance program. Many “problems” with the lawn are more like minor annoyances. Unless the problems result in a full-scale death of the turf, many aren't even worth worrying about. Many can be avoided or solved with good cultural care or manual intervention, rather than with chemicals.
