Since 1975 I have taught a Painting Workshop for the Monmouth County Parks system in NJ. I never got a degree in art - but rather a BA in Political Science and History from CCNY. I went on to Graduate School in Russian Area Studies at CUNY, but realized after one year that I was not a scholar, and really wanted to study art. I began by drawing the figure every day for 4 years at The Art Student's League - getting a scholarship juried by Philip Guston (an artist I had never heard of) and learning to paint by running to MOMA, the MET and FRICK (all these institutions were free at that time) whenever I had a chance to breathe in great works of art.
I have taught literally thousands of students - some of whom are still studying with me. My classes are inexpensive and I am determined to keep it that way. Every Tuesday I teach 4 classes - a 14 hour day. Wednesdays I recuperate. BUT no matter how physically bad I feel - ie: back and knee pain, dizziness, etc. I recover when I look at what people are doing - all levels interest me - the artist who is a rank beginner to ones who have shown in NYC. Their work keeps my eye fresh and I never feel tired in the face of inventiveness - no matter the degree of so-called "talent." I also have found that what I preach to them, I too must practice - authenticity and a passion for the beauty of the process.

I am thrilled to be included in this exhibition at one of my very favorite galleries - Cheim & Read.
Cheim & Read was founded in 1997 by John Cheim and Howard Read. The gallery actively represents an international group of leading contemporary artists and estates, embracing diverse artistic practices, from painting and sculpture to photography and video.

A lovely Billy Sullivan exhibition surprised me at Kaufmann Repetto Gallery 535 W. 22nd St. I was about to get into the elevator down to the street to continue my meandering into Chelsea Galleries, when I glimpsed out of the corner of my eye drawings - with the lightness of a caress, that I can only dream of. I am a fan of Billy Sullivan's art; he paints and draws individuals he knows, including his husband Klaus Kertess; subjects are rendered with a delicacy of touch - whether it be pastels or oils - conveying the fleeting nature of time. The color red dominates many of his paintings; its vibrancy, a reminder that nestled in beauty is the complicated abundance of being alive..

Because of my family history I fear demagoguery - I am suspicious of cultishness, I am suspect of "easy slogans" which mask complicated issues and prevert the facts. Bernie Sanders - a man I respect - is regrettably getting caught up in his projected persona - accepting the cloak of frenzied adulation and stoking the harsh divide of his supporters who have demonized Hillary's years of service into a flat cardboard "object" of evil. Karl Rove must be celebrating.

I feel that Trump. Cruz and Sanders preach many of the same easy answers to issues- all three rail against the "establishment" - as if they themselves were not vital cogs in that very system; overhauling the years-long fight for ACA/Obamacare; ignoring Women's issues - particularly safeguarding Roe v. Wade; blaming all of societies ills on Wall Street/Banks; isolationist Foreign Policy except when it affects USA business interests, against NAFTA and recent Free Trade Agreement; safeguarding the 2nd Amendments right to bear arms; and redoing the way things are structured in the electoral process - especially when it turns against them, ie: delegate system...(Actually Hillary got more votes from the "people" than Obama - counting Michigan where he did not run - but the delegate count favored him in 2008.) Yes that and the Electoral College needs to be changed, but not in the midst of a campaign - only when it no longer benefits your candidacy.
Democracy is messy - many voices, many ideas chiming in - our government's strengths and weaknesses lie in the 3 Branches of Government - a system of checks and balances.

The Carrie Moyer's exhibition titled SIRENS, is as the title implies an exhibition that lures and entices with its exuberant and seductive beauty - drawing the viewer in to crash against surfaces that are rich in diverse mark making - including wet drips, shiny vs. the flatness of matte painted surfaces, and most importantly the scale - and I don't been large - but rather the relationship between the abstracted forms to the edges of the canvas that is breathtaking. We are ambushed by color; color that is vibrant showering light upon the room as if the sun decided to make a visit. Regrettably the show ends today, March 26th.
