In Uttarakhand – unattended so far !!

Here are some glimpses from Guptkashi region, worst affected by the Uttarakhand floods in June last year. A large number of people from many parts of the country are working in the toughest conditions amidst frequent rains and landslides to revive the infrastructure. The tin shanties are home to many, who are staying in these conditions with their families. Although these people are backbone to the ongoing work but there is hardly any attention of the government or agencies over them.

In the regions of Uttarkashi and Guptkashi, Goonj has reached over 2000 people so far with the basic clothing, ration, utensils, blankets, toys, hygiene kits, candles, torches, umbrellas etc. Warm clothing, shoes, blankets and MY Pad - Goonj's cloth sanitary pad, have been the biggest relief for people. These are also the places where solar lanterns could be best used !!

Worldwide people are observing the first ’Menstrual Hygiene Day’ today.. Certainly a big step toward breaking the silence and stigmas on the issue of menstruation.

Here are some films about why it’s important to talk about, Goonj's work around this issue and how each one of us can make a difference..

- MyBigPlunge Breaking Taboos - Sanitary Napkin a Matter of Dignity (Teaser1)
- Real Heros CNN IBN.avi
- Anshu Gupta- 'CNN IBN Real Heroes' Award Winner 2009'

Some organisations have asked for these films in their offices, cafeterias etc. to spread awareness about a highly taboo issue. See if you can also do the same.

In Uttarakhand – unattended so far !!

In order to revive the roads and structures, damaged by the floods last year, hundreds of people have travelled from different parts of Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, UP and Nepal as contract labourers. Many of them have come with their families unaware of the difficult terrain and weather conditions, living in tin shanties in the most vulnerable locations. With a tough accessibility, the basics of life have also become a huge question. Although we all pass through these roads, these people have so far been unattended in terms of any basic relief.

Treading the toughest routes of Uttarkashi, Goonj team reached Bhaironghati (85 km from Gangori) and 32 kms farther Naga Border, where the temperature dips to as low as - 4 deg with regular snowfalls. Goonj reached the basic essentials like woolens, clothes, hygiene kits, shoes, candles, torches, umbrellas etc. So far, we have reached over 1500 people scattered in different terrains of Uttarkashi. Here are some glimpses..

The culture of shame and silence associated with menses results in great hardship, indignity and health risk to countless girls and women. Globally, hundreds of myths and taboos surround the issue of menstruation which certainly needs to be broken. Some of them are here - http://njpc.goonj.org/myths-and-taboos/

Goonj's "NJPC - Million Voices" campaign is an effort to raise global awareness and bring together collective expressions on this issue. Share your voice..on- http://njpc.goonj.org/lets-get-started/
