New: Google+ Hangouts Adds Apps, Hangouts API Leaves Preview
#googleplusupdate #hangouts #apis #developers

Hangouts are a great place to meet friends, new people, watch YouTube and collaborate. Starting today, you can do even more together, in a Hangout, including play poker with friends, do battle for pop culture trivia, draw and color with your friends and share presentations with SlideShare. These new featured apps are live now and Google+ Developers can use the API to make Hangouts even more incredible. #thatsaplus
Do more with more apps in Google+ Hangouts

Hangouts are great for spending time together, as well as doing things together. That's why we've been adding apps to Hangouts since launch -- from YouTube to screensharing to Google Docs. Today we're introducing a starter set of featured apps, and enabling developers to share any hangout app with the entire Google+ community!

Now when you start a hangout, you'll notice a new "Apps" button at the top of your screen. Once inside you'll see both Featured and Recent hangout apps, including:

1) +Aces Hangout, for playing poker with friends, face-to-face-to-face
2) Clubhouse Challenge by +Bravo, for testing your pop culture IQ against other teams
3) +Cacoo, for wire-framing, mind-mapping and diagramming with others
4) Google Effects, for trying on headwear, eyewear or facial hair
5) +Scoot & Doodle, for drawing and coloring with the people you care about
6) +SlideShare, for co-viewing presentations, docs and videos

Beyond these featured items, we're making it easy for any developer to distribute hangout apps across Google+. Just post a link to your app, and users can click to add it to their hangout. It then appears in “Recent” for all their future hangouts. Our Google+ Developers blog has more details

We're rolling out these changes gradually, so check back soon if you don't see them yet. In the meantime, you're welcome to hang out for a while, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Now, if only you could hangout from iOS or there was an API to allow third-party G+ reading apps.
This is great, but there are often times that I want to have a teleconference via Google Hangout and not everyone has a gmail email address. I realize that everyone should get a gmail account, but it would be easier to convince them to do so if they could get a taste of the Google Hangouts before joining.

Are there plans to make it possible for non-googlers to join a hangout (via specific invitation, of course)?
Will these apps be on tablets too, or just desktop PCs?
apis are open cant wait to see what devs come up with
+Anthony Kelly Sure, but some people are adverse to signing up for new things. For example, there are a few people I work with who still have aol accounts. Having the ability to invite them into a hangout and then show them what is possible with the screenshare, docs, etc would probably go a long ways in convincing them to join the +Google+ side.
I'm looking forward to what this brings!
I loooove how you implement more and more cool stuff into Hangouts! This thing is awesome!!!
I have to buy a webcam first, if its allright with you.

How many users are actually using google hangout?
wow! cool!
hangouts are definitely the big deal of G+.
And it's keep getting better.
improving hangout is the best way for google to get more sociable
I discussed this post with 2 people in a hangout.
First things first guys, many things should be improved regarding the G+ interface and functionality, please take care of them first, and then yes you may spend your time creating doodly goodies - and I love G+ hangouts, so I'm just being honest, not trolling.

ps - many good ideas were discussed here
+Hans-Christian Francke It is! You can access Hangouts from the Messenger in Google+ app, although the functions are not as rich as the desktop version.
