The Museum is housed in the Palau Nacional, which was built for the International Exhibition in Barcelona (1929). Strategically located on the side of the mountain of Montjuïc, it overlooks the city, which lies at its feet.

Originally planned by Josep Puig i Cadafalch and built by Pere Domènech i Roura, Eugeni P. Cendoya and Enric Catà, it is clear example of the Beaux-Arts style of architecture.
